New Purple viaducts swing into place this weekend; some service suspended

Because crews will be replacing rail bridges at Dempster and Grove streets in Evanston, service on the Purple Line will be suspended from Howard to Davis from 8:30 pm Friday to 4 am Monday.

Bus shuttles will operate as a substitute for rail service making stops adjacent to the Howard, South Blvd., Main, Dempster and Davis stations, according to a CTA news release. The shuttles will depart from the Howard and Davis stations approximately every 5-15 minutes and will operate during the same hours of operation as the Purple Line.

On Sunday only, the CTA will increase the frequency of the shuttles, in anticipation of increased traffic due to the Chicago Pride Parade. The frequency of bus shuttle service along the Purple Line will increase, with buses operating approximately every 5-8 minutes from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The CTA will complete the $15.5 million Purple Line viaduct project later this year.

  • In the past few months I have spotted what looked like a bridge to and from nowhere under construction in the middle of a street perpendicular to the Purple line. Was this in fact one of the new bridges being pre-assembled?

I hadn't seen the particular one, but yes.

Generally, they have to have the bridge structure to swing into position as soon as the line is cut. A similar situation occurred when the Wells Street L bridge was swung over Wacker.

Probably. That's how they did the bridge replacement at Greenleaf a few weekends ago. The replacement bridge was assembled east of the existing viaduct in the Jewel parking lot until the existing viaduct bridge was demolished. Then they rolled in the new bridge and connected it to the existing embankment. I walked by there a few times during the weekend and it was really interesting to see.

It's the same way they replaced the Church and Main viaduct bridges in 2005 and 2006. I saw a video of the Church or Main replacement several years ago and it was interesting to watch the demolition and roll in.

I don't think this is the video you are referring to, because it's just from last year, but it has similar content. http://youtu.be/5MUNp2-seoc

In this video, they explain what is going to happen with the now-current Purple Line viaduct project, and show some time lapse and construction footage from the 2005-06 viaduct replacement. You see the old viaduct demolished and the new one rolled in.

Also an explanation and picture in the June Construction Report.

Thanks everyone for confirming my guess. The one I saw was not in a parking lot that I noticed; it was just in the middle of what appeared to be a side street. I believe it was somewhere south of Davis.

On a related note, had occasion to take the shuttle from Howard on Saturday and it worked pretty well. The bus was easy to find with "PURPLE LINE" on the route display, and timed so a group of people just debarking from the Red were able to catch it. Allow extra travel time because of traffic, though--which fortunately I did.
