CTA lays off three media staffers in further front-office pruning

The ax fell on three CTA media relations employees this week as President Forrest Claypool continues his budget pruning. The Chicago Tribune reports:

The CTA on Tuesday let go its general manager of public affairs, manager of media relations and a spokeswoman, said Molly Sullivan, vice president of communications and marketing. The downsizing leaves four employees working in media relations under Sullivan.

  • Been hearing chatter that Claypool's regime doesn't care much about facts or details (and doesn't retain them either). Apparently they aren't interested in reality and prefer misleading or misinformation -- as evidenced by the disinformation from Claypool about the 5000s and other stories that Jack has cited recently. Who needs news relations people when you can just make up information, or purposely withhold or mislead the public and news media?

  • Anonymous beat me to the punch.

Googling, using the search site:transitchicago.com molly sullivan (Google corrected it to "without quotes," since the entry was Sullivan, Molly) turned up the CTA_Employee_Salary_List_2011-2011-10-14-.xls.

    Let's see:

Sheila Gregory, General Manager of Public Affairs. The Tribune pointed out that she didn't use her employee pass during the time she was ramping up the funding frenzy.

Wanda Taylor, Manager of Media Relations.

    So, two well known names.

I didn't find out anything about Molly Sullivan's background, except the above spreadsheet, which indicates that she gets $150K a year. Apparently for that, she has to talk to Hilkevitch, and,at least with regard to FOIA, seems more in stonewall than outright deception mode.

For that matter, another Google search turned up a LinkedIn for CTA general managers, including Graham Garfield of chicago-l.org, who is Communications VP General Manager, Customer Information. I wonder, when publishing that the 5000s were going to the Pink and Green Lines whether he was engaged in leaking, and if that is why the 5000 page hasn't been updated since then.

So, there is some information on the Internet, which leads to much better conspiracy theories than Scooter might have.

  • SO, 150K A YEAR FOR FOUR PEOPLE! WHO DOES SHE KNOW, DALEY? O,YEA SULLIVAN, HMM, HER DAD WORKED FOR OLD MAN DALEY, CONNECT THE DOTS. BINGO, WONDER WHAT KIND OF PENSION SULLIVAN WILL GET IN TWO YEARS> BETTER THAN THE THREE SHE LET GO!

  • In reply to WHOSETHEBOSS:

I don't think each of them were making $150K

  • In reply to chris:

No, Gregory was making $123K, and Taylor $79.5K.

However, instead of being lazy, both of you guys could have Googled it, same as I did. It is even on the transitchicago.com About CTA->Freedom of Information page under "CTA Employee Salary List (Excel Document [.xls], 1 MB)"

  • Also interesting, if you want to talk budget, is that Bus Operators and Rail Operators are on the list. Most make $22-$29 an hour. I suppose one could compare them to other agencies, but that doesn't sound that exorbitant to me.
