Former Daley insider takes over as chief of staff for CTA board chair

After Mayor Rahm Emanuel plucked his own chief of staff out from under his pal Terry Peterson, the CTA's board chairman, Peterson has hired a former Daley insider as a replacement. Call it the city hall revolving door?

Joan Coogan, director of former Mayor Richard M. Daley's Office of Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) , took over as Peterson's chief of staff, reports the Sun-Times. In May, Rahm had hired Theresa Mintle, the former CTA incumbent, as his go-to gal.

Coogan in 2009 took over the IGA, which was at the center of the city hall hiring scandal in 2005.

Mintle had worked in the Daley administration early in her career, and started her CTA career as the Frank Kruesi's manager of governmental relations. She later was hired by board Chair Carole Brown. She's also related to distantly to the mayor. Her paternal grandmother was a cousin of Eleanor "Sis" Daley, Mr. Daley's mother and the wife of Mayor Richard J. Daley, as noted by Greg hinz at Crain's Chicago Business.

  • The CTA Board does nothing itself (doesn't even pick its own Executive Director), but the board president needs a chief of staff, and it has to be nepotism, except not his own relative?

Now we know what's wrong with the state of Illinois.

An aside: They showed Emanuel twice at The Cell yesterday, including not standing up when AJ hit the triple. I can understand one of his daughters (I think) wearing a Cubs shirt, but wonder if the single track announced last week was to get him a quicker ride than you had. Of course, now that he is da Mare, he probably doesn't ride the Red Line any more.

  • In reply to jack:

As strange as it may seem, the Mayor is a Cubs fan.

  • In reply to Cheryl:

The mayor grew up in Wilmette. Of course he's a Cubs fan. I'm sure he would have gotten more crap for being a Sox fan than he probably got from taking ballet lessons.

  • In reply to marthat3:

That's what I meant when I said his daughter was wearing a Cubs shirt. Not too many people who live in Ravenswood are Sox fans, and he had previously announced his preference.

Speaking of Cubs fans and Ravenswood, I followed up on the L flags displayed behind Pena striking out, and found this picture of interest (and I was not referring to the goats or black cat).

  • In reply to marthat3:

It just seems strange to have a mayor who is a Cubs fan. But then it still feels weird to have a mayor who isn't named Daley.

  • In reply to marthat3:

In other, and probably much more relevant transit news, the Tribune just posted a story that service cuts are threatened for July because Quinn hasn't come through with the state payments to cover the RTA bonds he had them float to freeze fairs, on the promise that the state would pay the debt service.

Yet one of the above posters asked if his opponent gave a rat's @$$ about transit. And the system falls apart while the various transit board members worry about patronage.

  • In reply to jack:

Shudda been "fares." Ize going incompetent.

  • "go-to gal"??

Come on, Kevin, you're better than that.

  • In reply to AlexanderRusso:

I don't see why you are calling Kevin out on this. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm a card carrying, bra burning, 60's marching women's libber from way back, and I don't find it offensive at all. Please explain?
