Why doesn't CTA use ctatraintracker.com domain name?

If you want to access the CTA's Bus Tracker website, you just navigate to ctabustracker.com.

So you might think you would go to ctatraintracker.com to use Train Tracker.

Wrong.

That's because Michael Goldstein of Buffalo Grove owns that domain name. No doubt he would love to sell it to the CTA. For a price.

Goldstein is a domain name miner. He owns more than 500 other domain names. He bought ctatraintracker.com in July 2008.

  • Here's hoping the CTA doesn't give in to the scumbag.

  • You're missing "a" ... "Goldstein is [a] domain name miner."

Don't want to give them free advice, but nothing says they have to use ctatraintracker. Could be traintrackercta, or some other combination, so long as it is available. I'm also not going to do the GoDaddy or Network Solutions search for them. They have guys like Coppoletta to do it.

After all, the main reason why the main site is transitchicago.com is that some business had cta.com. In fact, still does.

Jack, of course I understand that. But once people get accustomed to one "standard" such as "ctabustracker.com", it's usually best to stay with it - "ctatraintracker.com".

  • In reply to jack:

It's called a "squatter" and he can be removed from his domain if he's not using it for anything sometimes. However, legal will probably need to get involved.

  • In reply to WCityMike:

    cta.gov is available.

  • They should sue him to get control of the name.
If he bought that domain name after Bus tracker was started, they'll have no problem getting it for free, except for the legal costs, which will also have the effect of bankrupting Goldstein.
But the CTA was also criminally stupid for not taking the traintracker name at the same time.
