Straight dope on CTA ridership numbers for 2010

The CTA released official ridership figures this week for 2010. I reported earlier in the month on this, but here's ridership by the numbers.

Total ridership

  • Total ridership in 2010: 516.9 million rides
  • Total ridership in 2009: 521.3 million rides
  • Difference in rides, from 2009 to 2010: 4.4 million fewer rides
  • Percent change from 2009 to 2010: 0.8 percent decrease

Rail ridership

  • Rail ridership in 2010: 210.8 million rides
  • Rail ridership in 2009: 202.5 million rides
  • Difference in rides, from 2009 to 2010: 8.3 million more rides
  • Percent change from 2009 to 2010: 4.1 percent increase

Bus ridership

  • Bus ridership in 2010: 306 million rides
  • Bus ridership in 2009: 318.6 million rides
  • Difference in rides, from 2009 to 2010: 12.6 million fewer rides
  • Percent change from 2009 to 2010: 4 percent decrease

Explain please

Rail ridership grew because this is the first full year of full eight-car service to all Brown Line stations. Bus ridership dropped because of the 18% cut in bus service that went into effect in February 2010.

Ridership comparison for last 10 years

  • Overall ridership grew by 37.3 rides
  • Percent change from 2000 to 2010: 7.8 percent increase
  • Rail ridership grew by 37.3 million rides, a 7.8 percent increase
  • Bus ridership increased by 3.9 million rides, a 1.3 percent increase

  • I'd like the real dope, the type toked on many lines. ;-)

As I noted when you posted the preliminaries, a 4% drop in bus ridership attributed to an 18% cut--not a 30% or so drop that those promoting doomsday in 2005-2007 said.

Of course, since these are all unlinked trips (and CTA says that it even estimates cross platform transfers), the more interesting question would be how the farebox revenue was affected by all of this. I am also sure that the one undeterminable number is how many seniors were deterred from taking free rides because the bus was too crowded to board. Probably not many.

Jack, I'll be looking for the revenue results and will post. Probably will get them at February board meeting.

  • In reply to KevinO’Neil:

    Thanks.
