News pickup: New rail cars moving to Purple, Yellow lines

Here are a few CTA news items from the last week.

New rail cars moving north. The CTA will test its new Series 5000 rail cars on the Purple and Yellow lines beginning today. After this run the CTA will have successfully tested the prototype rail cars on all eight rail lines. Read what CTA Tattler likes and doesn't like about the rail cars with center-facing seating.

CTA outsourcing some IT projects.
The CTA announced last week it has created a pool of information technology vendors to provide support services as needed. "Rather than hiring more full-time employees, we feel it is better use of our financial resources to be able to draw upon specific skill sets when needed by tapping into this pool of vendors," CTA President Richard L. Rodriguez said in a statement. "This strategy has worked successfully in other areas at CTA such as construction - contracting for services that are needed for a defined period of time helps to secure the best suited talent without taking on a long-term expense. This type of IT outsourcing has become a successful trend in the industry."

And I love the creative acronym the CTA developed for the project: CTA TRANSPORT - Technology Resource Acquisitions for Programs of Regional Transit.

CTA tinkers with Wacker Drive service, reroutes. Effective with the start of service today, a new bus
stop will be added and  two reroutes will be adjusted in an attempt to improve traffic flow during
Wacker Drive construction, the CTA announced:

#120 Ogilvie/Wacker Express -
Westbound #120 buses will travel over the regular route along Grand
past Michigan to Wabash then will operate via Wabash, Wacker Drive,
Franklin, Madison to Canal before beginning eastbound service. Eastbound
#120 buses are not affected and will continue to operate over the
original reroute.

New Bus Stop:
Franklin/Randolph: westbound buses will begin serving the new near side stop.

#121 Union/Wacker Express
- Westbound #121 buses will operate over the regular route along
Grand past Michigan to Wabash then will travel via Wabash, Wacker Drive,
Franklin to Adams and then resume the regular route west of Wacker
Drive. Eastbound #121 buses are not affected and will travel over the
regular route.

#122 Illinois Center/Ogilvie Express - Westbound. There are no new changes in routing for westbound or eastbound #122 buses.

New Bus Stop: Franklin/Randolph: westbound buses will begin serving the new near side stop.

A total of 13 routes are impacted by Wacker Drive
construction. During the construction, customers traveling on affected
routes are encouraged to allow extra travel time.

  • That's it, ship more IT work off to India!
    Brilliant, just brilliant!

  • In reply to ElstonClybourn:

Well, if that happens Coppolletta and Dan X won't be happy.

Ha! Thanks for the laugh Jack.

These new el cars sucks big time. There are fewer seats, so more will stand . . . on an express train from Evanston to the Loop, that is madness. F$%K the CTA
