Here's the schedule for new rail cars' debut on Red Line this week

The first set of the new Series 5000 rail cars will debut to passengers Monday on northbound Red Line run 806, leaving 95th Street at 7:30 am, according to the schedule published at the Chicago Transit Yahoo group.

Eddie Fisher of that group says this schedule is good for Monday through Friday for the next four weeks.

Update: Chicagomotorman also confirms Eddie's schedule and adds that the first run is out of Howard at 6:12 am Monday.

Thanks to CTA Gray Line Project for noting the schedule in a comment. He also speculates that the CTA will run them in four-car set, keeping two cars as spares. The CTA has 10 cars for testing.

  • Give me some credit, I posted up yesterday on subchat.

  • In reply to ibilldavis:

Sorry ibill, didn't see that. Please provide a link and I'm happy to give you credit.

I e-mailed it to what I think is your personnal address. I would have posted it on Chicago transit yahoo groups, but I was censored, thrown off the group fo something the moderator didn't agree with me on, (welcome to obama's America) Kevin I will say this about you, we may have disagreed in the past, but you have never thrown be off the Tattler. BTW, if you want to give credit to Eddie Fisher, go ahead, he is a freind of mine.

Who knew Obama controlled obscure Chicago transit chat sites? Man, that guy sure gets around. Nuclear non-proliferation discussions with dozens of nations one day; Chicago transit minutiae the next. I'm beginning to think the problem isn't that he wasn't born in the United States, but, more importantly, that he's not even human. How does he do it? Not a hair out of place.

  • In reply to ibilldavis:

Seriously? You think Obama was the reason you got banned off of some other web board?

  • Go to 95th - the train will not be in service from Howard to 95th. According to the links Kevin referenced, on Monday the first trip starts at 95th (7:30 a.m.). For the rest of the week, the train will start at Howard at 6:12.

  • "He [Gray Line Project] also speculates that the CTA will run them in four-car set, keeping two cars as spares."

Not sure if Gray Line is trying to say the 5000s will run as "4 car-sets" (4 sets of two cars each) or 4-car sets (2 sets of fours cars each) but neither is likely, for an obvious reason. At least initially, they will be running on the Red Line -- in rush hour. I wouldn't expect them to run anything but 8-car trains at this time.

  • The Yahoo (Chicago Transit) group thread of posts that Kevin linked to explicitly said that Monday's schedule was different than the subsequent days, and that the first trip would be out of 95th. I wouldn't be surprised if those responses and clarifications were added after Kevin made his initial link, though.

However, the other site Kevin linked to, subchat (New York fan site), simply had it wrong.

    Chicago - 1, New York - 0

Thanks District - we found out the hard way this morning that the trains were deadheading to 95th Street from Howard. The latest post at the Yahoo group clarifying that was at 4:45 this morning. C'est la vie.

  • Can they couple? Yes and no.

Mechanically, they can connect (couple) a 5000 to one of the other series. However, electrically the cars cannot be operated with each other - power, controls, lights, doors, etc.

If you happen to see a pair of 5000s in a consist with other cars, it likely means the 5000s are not powered, just being dragged back to a shop by the other cars.

  • I was just at Harrison to nab the early evening 819 run, waited for it's scheduled time, and...here comes a run of the mill red line bearing run number 819. The CTA having issues with these cars? I really had hopes on riding one. Darn.
