Warmer weather brings a spate of bus stop relocations

More than two dozen bus stops are being relocated today, according the CTA's Weekday Service Alert.

There are bus stop changes throughout the year for the CTA, but this seemed like a lot for one day. It got me wondering whether the CTA was trying to speed buses because of the service cuts that went into effect more than a year ago.

But I was wrong.

"Adjustments
are made to bus stops across the system throughout the year; however, there
often is an influx of changes around this time of year (late-winter/early
spring)," said a CTA spokesperson when I asked about the larger number of relocations.

It turns out that bus stop changes that do not require the relocation or
installation of a sign post are implemented immediately. However, during the
winter months, any changes to bus stops that require the relocation or
installation of a sign post are delayed until the ground has thawed and
work crews can drill the posts into the concrete.

The CTA also wants us to know they are always looking for ways to improve travel times. "CTA management routinely reviews and analyzes service data and
information in an effort to make service adjustments based on changes in an
area, e.g. residential or business additions and traffic patterns," said the spokesperson. "In addition,
to help improve travel times CTA also places bus stops on the far side of
traffic lights whenever possible."

Check the continuation for full list from the CTA alert about this.

There also are a couple of temporary bus stop eliminations:

  • From March 3 till June 1, the #29 bus stop at the southwest corner will be removed at State and Pershing, due to underground construction.
  • From March 1 till Aug. 31, the #81 Lawrence buses both eastbound and westbound will not stop on the southwest and northeast corners at Lawrence/LeClaire, due to viaduct construction.

  • Funny, last year they moved that Pulaski/Lawrence stop for the #53 from the north side of the intersection to the south side. Now they're moving it back? Failed experiment or busywork?

  • If placing bus stops on the far side of an intersection helped travel times, why didn't we all notice it when the CTA started implementing it wholesale a couple of years ago? It's bullshit.
