Penny rides, extended bus and train hours, great New Year's stories

The CTA officially announced Monday that fares will be just one penny from 8 pm Thursday, New Year's Eve, till 6 am Friday, New Year's Day. Now, that's a lot of late night partying!

And many bus routes and train lines will run later than usual. Check the CTA Web site for details. Usually on New Year's, exit gates at rail station are just left open, and bus drivers are very lenient about riders who may not have a penny. The CTA cannot legally offer free rides, so one penny rides is the best they can do.

Meanwhile, CTA Tattler will be here to chronicle your strange commute on New Year's. Tweet your CTA experience using the #cta hash, or just email me. I'll compile them all in a post next week.
