Old Chicago rail maps

Late last year Chicagoist compiled
in a post
a bunch of old rail maps from Chicago-l.org.

It's certainly worth a look if you're interested in how the CTA
came to be what it is today.

Here are just five of the 26 maps
Chicagoist posted from Chicago-l.

  • On the 1942 and 1944 maps, there's a line that doesn't seem to exist any more. There's a north-south part and, coming off the north end, a west branch and a northwest branch. Who knows what it was called, was it an elevated or subway, and was some of it incorporated into the Blue Line?

  • In reply to CCWriter:

The north-south part was the northern part of the Paulina Connector. The branch to the west was the Humbolt Park branch. The branch to the northwest was incorporated into what is today the Blue Line from Damen to California. All of it was elevated. The chicago-l.org website contains a wealth of information on the history of the "L".

So, I skimmed the rather long article, but if I understand it correctly, they have rebuilt the Paulina Connector and they could run trains on it if they want to. What lines does it currently connect?

  • In reply to CCWriter:

They have only rebuilt part of the Paulina Connector. The part north of Lake was almost entirely demolished (the only thing remaining is a bridge). The part south of Lake was rebuilt and is currently used by the Pink Line.

Who's ever decision is was to rip out the Humboldt line should be shot. That would make such a difference to the area these days and could have easily been extended over the years farther west along north. If you ever happen to be along north ave from Damen/Milwaukee elevated west to Lawndale walk east to the first ally. Yep, used to be there. :( You can kind of still tell because everything on that side of the ally is pushed back or post 1955 construction. Man it'd be so sweet to have a train stop right at Humboldt blvd and north for the park!

  • In reply to CCWriter:

Nuts, meant to say walk NORTH to the first ally. Sorry.
