Cecil tackles the El line colors on Straight Dope

Why is the Red Line red and the Brown Line brown?

It's all very complicated, actually, at least in the sense that there was no good reason for the colors at first. In some cases, train lines got their color name based on what color they were given on early CTA maps.

But I will just let Cecil Adams explain it all here, as he does so well in his Chicago Reader column.

  • Cool story.

  • At least Roy Benedict and Dennis McClendon would be the two to know.

Now, if only someone could explain why bus route numbers such as 13, 37, 38, and 89 repeatedly bite the dust.

  • If yellow is difficlt to see on maps, why couldnt the CTA just use black for the Skokie Swift like they did on the older versions of maps?
