CTA sued over ban on ads for "x-rated" video games

Last week the Entertainment Software Assn. filed suit challenging the CTA's ban on advertisements video games rated for adults or mature audiences, saying it violates the First Amendment guarantees of free speech.

Last year the CTA pulled ads for Grand Theft Auto under pressure from some media outlets. The game maker sued the CTA a month later.

A CTA spokesperson last week said: "We believe
ordinance is defensible. CTA does not allow advertising for
alcohol or tobacco products and this ordinance is consistent with that

The CTA may be on to something there.

If nothing else, the lawsuit gets some publicity for the game makers.

  • Why did they sign the contract to allow the advertising in the first place if it wasn't "consistent with that long-standing policy"?
