Long lines and scary hallways at Basement of the Dead Haunted House

Every kid was afraid of going into their creepy basement. It’s cold, dark, and who knows what’s down there? Imagine how scary it would be to go into a basement that was not only full cobwebs, dust, and possibly roaches…but actual dead things that want to harm you?? Well if that is the case, then you might just be living in the Basement of the Dead haunted house in Aurora!

The legend is that two laundry mat assistants were horribly burned when the coal boiler they were working with exploded, after the management refused to fix it! So now, forever looking for revenge, they haunt the basement and refuse to let any other companies inside. They ALSO don’t want you to enter either and will do anything to stop you! Good luck!

When Team Gregula arrived at Basement of the Dead , there was a HUGE crowd waiting to get inside! Unfortunately people found themselves waiting for several hours to get in, but Basement of the Dead staff members were outside engaging the crowds in some dancing and free give-aways. It was unfortunate that people had to wait so long but I applaud the management and staff for trying to keep the crowd entertained. There was also food and drinks available to purchase.

The long wait was well worth it though because Basement of the Dead did not fail to impress! The haunted basement was full grungy sewers, of dark and twisting hallways, spinning rooms, animatronics, and some very elaborate scenery. We particularly liked the church full of angry zombie nuns. Anyone who went to parochial school would fear THAT room (they didn’t even really need to be zombies to be scary!) The one disappointment was that there were not a lot of actors inside of the haunt. Actors definitely help make the scenes scarier so more would’ve been nice. Also I feel that Basement of the Dead blew their whole budget on air cannons because every room you entered had at least one! One even blew right in my face as I left a room!

After you survive the Basement, you are rather quickly thrown into the next haunt Shattered which is all in 3D! The walls, floors, and various objects in the room were all colored with 3D paint to make everything stick out. Even the actors themselves had 3D facepaint! The main theme of Shattered was clowns, but there were also some other things thrown in. I thought the 3D effects were very fun and added an additional scare factor to the haunt. Not only is there an evil clown coming to kill you, but now his face is jumping off of his head too!

Two haunts, one 3D really makes for a great time. The lines were a bit too long for most people, but at least Basement of the Dead made a good effort at entertaining the crowd! There were tons of air cannons and not as many actors, but I do love me some spinning tunnels! Overall I give the haunt 4 and half out 5 Ankhs!

Unfortunately the season is over now, but there is always next year. Plus Basement of the Dead has been known to have seasonal haunts as well so there is still a chance to check it out! For more information check out their website here: Basement of the Dead. Enjoy the rest of your year and stay out of the basement!
