I initially was just going to add the lightning stills from downtown Chicago to my original post of the storm approaching from the west, but when I got a load of these, I decided they were worth their own separate post. Let me know if you agree.
This final photo should give some idea how hard it was raining at the height of the storm. Normally, from our perch on the 30th floor here in Chicago's Lakeview East community, we can see more than 30 miles south, all the way to the steel mills of northwest Indiana along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. For a few minutes today, we could barely see across the street.
