How 50 cents can buy you 10 minutes of solitude

Long before the kids are teenagers happily alone in their rooms, we have several inseparable years. Endless stretches of time where we wish we could pee in peace...finish a hot cup of coffee...take a long shower...have uninterrupted sex. Maybe an uninterrupted phone conversation sounds better than the sex.

Whatever you need to quickly refuel your soul (remember that bit about F*%k off, I'm trying to be Zen), this trick will buy you 10-15 minutes.

penniesIronically, my mom shared this tip with me back when my kids were 3 & 4. Once she suggested it I remembered doing it as a kid.

Wait a minute!

You did this to get me out of your hair? But I was an angel!

She might still be laughing.

Now, in order for this to work, the kids have to be old enough to have some concept of money and old enough to stop putting shit in their mouth all the time.

At some point you'll need to pick up rolls of pennies- yes- the bank ones. Get $5 worth so you're prepared for emergency alone time.

When you've reached the point where you JUST NEED 10 MINUTES to yourself, tell the kids they're going on a treasure hunt and they get to KEEP all of the coins they find.

Tell them they're searching for 50 (or 100 if you're really desperate for some solitude) pennies as you throw them in the yard, over the stairs railing...any place where they'll bounce and roll a bit.

mom-chillBUT...keep a couple in your pocket.

After 5 minutes when they can only find 48, tell them to keep looking for the other two. And you, my friend, just scored an extra 5 minutes.

Eventually you'll need to "help them look" and drop them in a corner to find.

Use this trick wisely. Too often and they catch on and lose enthusiasm, or they hold out for quarters instead!
