Shop Small Challenge #298: The Kitchen

It's been almost a year since I had one of the best meals of my life, in one of my favorite cities none the less. While some people feel rejuvenated at the beach, I'll take the mountains any day. Given the choice, I'd hop on a plane back to Boulder, Colorado to eat here again. Chances are, though, I'll make it faster to Chicago, the only non-Colorado location for The Kitchen.

The comforting, "homey", feeling isn't by accident. The Kitchen is committed to bringing local to the table: food, drinks, even the furnishings are locally crafted. Of course, I love the sustainability aspect, but their concept is more than farm to table.

In essence, they're creating the farm too. The Kitchen Community is their non-profit "Learning Gardens" that are in schools throughout the country, connecting kids and food. Awesome, right?!

Since The Kitchen sources ingredients locally, the menu changes seasonally. Which also means that their fried pumpkin is probably coming back soon. Sounds odd, I know, but it was incredibly delicious. The pasta was also fantastic, I believe my sister claimed that if that were the last dish she ever ate she'd die happy.

Our Boulder trip was a girl's weekend for my sister's birthday, so our dinner was served family style...not sure if that's always the case or just because we were a large group. If it's an option, do it, you'll want to try everything!

The Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner. They also have M-F "Community Hour" from 3-5pm. But, I want to try their Monday night "Community Night with the Farmer, Rancher, & Purveyor" where 20% is donated to The Kitchen Community and its "Learning Gardens."

Though I haven't been to the Chicago location, they're located on the river and it looks like it's going to be a gorgeous weekend. So make your reservation now... and let me know if the fried pumpkin is back!
