Politics: The 6th Ward Republicans

Yes, that's right Republicans in the 6th ward. The political home of Former Mayor Washington and Sawyer. A democratic strong hold for years is seeing an upsurge of Republican candidates.

While in the past, Republican candidates such as former Governor Jim Edgar and candidate Patrick Fitzgerald at the state level have visited the community there hasn't been any major support from the Republican party since Charles Gaines was voted State Representative in the late 1970's.

This year we have three candidates for Republican committeemen. While the committeeman position is a non paid position the interest in the position has raised eyebrows in the community. The candidates are Jackie Robinson, Darnell B. Macklin and Michael Sangster. Robinson is the current committeemen but Macklin has been the most visible.

Darnell Macklin is a life long Chatham resident and community activist. Not much is known about the other candidates.

So as the 6th ward changes politically, the ward is also becoming more politically diverse.

  • Its about time black people voted their interests instead of with people who marginalise and ignore them until its election season.
In this election season and all I hear about is the latino vote and women. There is no talk about black people at all. This is vey telling, it shows who is a priority and who is at the back of the line.
