Possible spoilers if you’ve been living under a rock.
I rarely get excited to see new movies, but from the first preview I saw of P.S. I Love You, I knew I had to see it. I don’t know if it was the story line, the cast, or the Irish scenery that made me want to see it. Probably because the movie came out ten years ago. Damn, I’m getting old.
I saw the movie and it quickly became a favorite of mine. The scene where they are in the lake made me want to fish in the mountains. The scenes in the Irish pubs made me want to visit to flirt with a cute Irishman. But the scene that struck me most was when she was walking through the Wicklow Mountains.
I actually never thought about going to Ireland before. It wasn’t a dream of mine at all. I thought Ireland was going to be one big green patch of grass. I could not have been more wrong.
It honestly wasn’t until four years later that I considered going. One day on my lunch break, I came across a travel flyer in the Chicago Reader for Ireland and I got to thinking. I went home and watched the P.S. I Love You again.
While I was watching the movie again, the scene where Hilary Swank’s character takes her mom to Ireland to see her laugh again touched me. While my mom wasn’t having trouble laughing, she had a few hard years and deserved something magical.
You see, my mom had two dreams that I knew about. One was to be a mom. Obviously she accomplished that one. Her other dream was to see Ireland. At that moment I had an epiphany.
My mom and I were going to Ireland.
I planned it behind her back and surprised her one day with the full plans.
We went and it was magical. We didn’t do what they did in the movie. We made our own plans and saw what we saw what we wanted. We laughed so hard we peed our pants. Honestly one of the best weeks of my life and I will never forget it.
