It was announced last week that Saturday Night Live would be adding three Chicagoans to its cast. Congratulations to Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, and Tim Robinson for getting called up the big leagues. I am not incredibly familiar with Aidy and Cecily but I have seen Tim on many occasions and if he brings to SNL what he has brought many times to stages in Chicago we are in for a treat.
In my opinion SNL has been a bit stale for a bit now. There have been standouts like Kristen Wiiig and Bill Hader among a few others but the sketches and writing are not what they used to be. Personally, it is good to see Chicago get the credit it deserves talent-wise. From music to comedy I have always believed Chicago has been an underappreciated treasure trove.
It is a large part of why we are lucky to live in this city.
Any given night the future stars of a sitcom or the next band with a huge radio hit might be onstage waiting to be discovered. I have been lucky enough to have conversations with Tim, he is a very affable guy and not only loves what he does but he has worked hard to get here. He deserves this moment and my only hope is that SNL plays to his strengths and gives him a real chance along with Aidy and Cecily.
They have already made Chicago proud by getting to this next step, now they make us even prouder by fixing Saturday Night Live. Now I just need to get that Second City education working for me…
