Today I found myself chuckling again looking at a picture I found on Facebook of James Dean in a ballet class, and I am dying to show all of those macho men out there that think ballet is for ladies, and if a man does it, somehow he is less of a man. Oh how ignorant they are because in fact, ballet is one of the hardest sports out there. Sorry guys, most of your heros you grew up loving or watch on TV, in theater, playing basketball, football (yes I said football), or in your action movies have been in contact with ballet to improve their skills.
Every time I say I do ballet, most of the time I get the following ignorant quote trying to make fun of me: "huh, so you get to wear tights like a girl". Your image of the ballet dancer is one running around in tights, and sure we wear them on stage. But it is better to wear tights and a helmet and run after a ball? Nothing against American football, but let's put things in perspective a little guys.
So here are a few pictures of your stars in their prime, and a quote from Michael Jordan (one of my heroes), especially for those of you that can't conceive of ballet being "manly enough" for you. And even the new it guy, Ryan Gosling is open about the fact he takes ballet classes.
Michael Jordan (and his famous logo): It's like my logo. I wasn't even dunking on that one. People think that I was. I just stood on the floor, jumped up and spread my legs and they took the picture. I wasn't even running. Everyone thought I did that by running and taking off. Actually, it was a ballet move where I jumped up and spread my legs. And I was holding the ball in my left hand. http://www.nba.com/jordan/hoop_mjonmj.html
Ryan Gosling: Ballet is something the 30-year-old actor still pursues. Gosling told the newspaper that though he currently has no free time, you can often find him at an L.A. dance studio. "I practice whenever I can," he said. I don't even know what I like about it but it's like acting, I'm just compelled to do it and I do it to find out why.
James Dean, American film actor of the 50s
Arnold Schwarzenegger, former professional bodybuilder, actor, businessman, investor, and politician
Patrick Swayze, former dancer at the Joffrey Ballet School
Willie Gault, Chicago Bears Super Bowl Champion
And the list goes on and on....
The truth is that ballet improves your balance, your speed, flexibility, and concentration. It gives you everything you need to be a better athlete. And so I have one dare for you it is to try to go through one hour of my training session (www.fabricecalmels.com)
