Luis Gutierrez introduces immigration reform bill

Today Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez unveiled legislation in favor of comprehensive immigration reform in Washington, D.C.

The Chicago Democrat introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 (CIR ASAP) in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"The time for waiting is over. This bill will be presented before Congress recesses for the holidays so that there is no excuse for inaction in the New Year," Gutierrez said in a statement on his Web site.

Immigration activists in Chicago are holding a press conference at 4:30 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Episcopal Church, 3442 W. 26th St. to support immigration reform.

Gutierrez is echoing the sentiments of many Latinos and immigrant activists who want immigration reform to be a higher priority in the Obama Administration.

"I'm very disappointed in (Obama)," said Emma Lozano, director of Sin Fronteras, in an interview with me. "But I'm hopeful he'll see there are 80 members of Congress behind this bill."

Lozano noted that the Gutierrez bill has support from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, as well as from African-American, Asian-American and other progressive leaders in Congress.

Also Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-N.Y.) is expected to soon introduce a bill in the Senate.

But will they have enough support?

The contentious battle over health care reform may look tame compared to the emotion that will be generated by an immigration debate. We can expect the extremists and even some moderate Republicans and Democrats to come out against immigration reform.

It could get very, very ugly.

"We know it's going to be a battle," Lozano said pointing to some of the extremist and nativist opponents such as FAIR and the Minuteman Project.

But she said that supporters also are prepared to flood Congress with phone calls and text messages in support of immigration reform.

In order for immigration reform to succeed, supporters have to mobilize and become more vocal that the usually vocal anti-immigrant lobby.

Congressman Gutierrez, who has long been an advocate for immigrant rights, is taking an important first step.

Hopefully, President Obama will follow through on his campaign promise and push Congress to pass this much needed reform.

  • This is going to be one hell of a battle, between a large majority of the AMERICAN PEOPLE, versus, awarding ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS and the RULE OF LAW. This will be remembered in the annuls of political history as one pro-illegal immigrant, anti-sovereignty politicians, finding themselves next year in the unemployment line with millions of other Americans.

We are about to enter the new year and Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL.) has offered an amendment that would tighten up some of the citizenship verification loopholes in the Senate health care reform bill (H.R.3590). Jeff Sessions' amendment would establish citizenship identification standards for the DHS Secretary, maintain the current 5-year waiting period for new legal immigrants and requires a status check using the SAVE PC application. This includes E-Verify, federal illegal immigrant job elimination program that's source is the universal internet. Radical organizations have tried to displace it, which was driven by the US.Chamber of Commerce, American Civil Liberties Union, large congregational religion, workers unions, subversive ethnic groups and treasonous lawmakers like Louis Gutteriez (D-IL), Sen. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi--but thats just skimming the surface of political pawns. CALL YOUR SENATORS AND EVEN CONGRESSMEN/ WOMEN. NOW and urge them to support this amendment. The Capitol Switchboard's telephone number is 202-224-3121.

The above phone number plus a 28cent postcard invasion of the Senate-House, could stop the out of control rush towards a Comprehensive Immigration Reform disaster. This is another name for BLANKET AMNESTY, of which (CIR) will legalize and reward all those who broke our Sovereign laws. Immigrants who waited patiently in line to be processed, have been shown that its a lot quicker to break the law and not be apprehended for their violation. The fact is millions and millions of indigent people will rush the border fence, to be counted when President Obama pushes through another AMNESTY.

Nobody in power seems to notice or cares that the 1986 law, turned into a absolute travesty. Newly legalized farmworkers deserted their jobs, looking for greener pastures in every state, causing unfair competition for lowly skilled citizens and legal residents. This time it could even be worse for the legal population, as millions of legitimized labor will undercut US workers. GOOD FOR LARGE AND SMALL BUSINESSES--NOT GOOD AT ALL FOR THE POPULACE WITH FAMILY COMMITMENTS? In November, both the number of unemployed persons, at 15.4 million, with the prior 3 months indicating payroll losses averaging 135, 000 a month. We must all adjoin with friends, family members and co-workers to immediately halt any new immigration reform package. It will hurt us all--and tell future illegal immigrants and those already here, we do not in anyway condone illegal entry through airports as a student or tourist, or through either border.

There must be heavy consequences to illegally settling here, such as upgrading the unathorised entry to a felony. In the future we must have an orderly immigration recruitment system, but only for people with highly skilled qualifications. Guest Workers must be equally vetted and not just given permission without strict--return instructions home, after completing their contract. No family reunification, because this has been rife with fraud as sponsors end up reneging on the financial aspect. All this issues can easily be resolved with amendment to the 1986 immigration bill. What to do with 20 to 30 million illegal aliens from across the world, slowly repatriate them using the SAVE ACT. Understand the immigration enforcement gradings of your politicians at NUMBERSUSA. Understand how taxpayers have been taken for a ride for decades and the unrevealed costs to you. See what JUDICIAL WATCH has to say about CORRUPTION in WASHINGTON.

  • Today we were watching wgn "girl around town" and Anna (sp?) who does a great job everyday has disappointed us by speaking in spanish on occasion. They sang most song in spanish if not all. This is the USA and we speak and understand ENGLISH. There are plenty of latino channels for latinos to get their news. Does our Broadcast System have not an ounce of patriotism for our country. While I have your attention my website has a petition to be signed by those who believe English should be the official language of our country http://www.maryrondoni.com I will say it again this is the USA a melting pot yes, however as guest here assimilation is how our country will remain united. We can't all speak different languages and expect civil obediance.

  • To Mr. Luis Gutierrez.....

Mr Gutierrez, I am an American who worked hard for the same company for ten years. I was laid off in March of 2009. I have a real problem with you. First of all, I was told I didn't qualify for food stamps with my unemployment being over 1100.00. I took a part time job, I make minimum wage to try and keep my condo from being taken by the bank. I work retail and I havet to tell you I see more Mexicans coming into the store I work who are illegal it isnt' even funny. Most don't even know how to operate a ATM machine, all have the link card. I see them steal thinks like hair color for men, condoms, and they are great at wanting everything for nothing. The most amazing thing is to see them buy candy, pop with their link cards and hang by the lotto machine all night playing lotto with their hundreds in cash. You want reform you better open your eyes. I don't care what nationality you are. Reform is not coming to my country and abusing every system available. The way I want reform is to ship all these illegals back who are stealing from Big name retailers and getting Link Cards like there is no tomorrow. Then they hop in their huge Chevy pick up trucks and Escalades and drive away to other stores and do the same thing.
