Gop.am, Republican URL-shortener, gets PWN'D, liberally (screengrabs)

The GOP has been trying hard to establish its own Web 2.0, digital strategy and this latest step can't be considered more than a stunt at this point. After announcing the launch of gop.am, a service to make url's more "conservative," folks on the web went nuts shortening urls for Web sites that are not very conservative, reportedly including one for bondage.

According to Larry Ward, president of Political Media, Inc., which produced the service, "GOP.AM provides an excellent tool for Republican activists to demonstrate brand loyalty."

The site was taken down for several hours today and many of the urls in Google's cache appear to have been disabled. But a bunch still have not. A quick tour revealed Mother Jones, a page for The Demise of the Republican Party and the site of neo-nazi white power movement Stormfront had been shared, probably by those pesky liberals. Really, guys? You didn't see this coming?

Mad props to Balloon Juice's forum where folks posted links to several of these gems.

Weird and fun stuff from all over:

  • OMG! What perfect justice!

  • The GOP loves America so much, that they used an Armenian domain code for their website.

  • In reply to jumblebunny:
