21st Annual Vans Warped Tour Stops in Chicagoland

Saturday our coverage was of the 21st Annual Vans Warped Tour concert event at Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in Tinley Park.

Vans Warped Tour started in 1995 by Kevin Lyman, in production with Vans and Creative Artists Agency and kicked off in Boise, Idaho, it has become the largest traveling music festival in the United States. The tour began as a showcase for alternative and punk rock music, and in more recent years featured very diverse genres. It has the distinction of being the longest running touring music festival in North America.

Warped Tour has become a launching pad for a lot of up and coming artists. The festival has been attributed to bringing unknown at the time artists like Blink-182, Green Day, Katy Perry and others to the mainstream spotlight.

The tour featured more than 100 bands. Bands played about 30 minutes over 10 different stages, with the most well known bands playing between the alternating two main stages. Starting at 11:00 am and ending around 9:00 pm, brought out fans as young as 13 years old (some with a parent in tow) up into their late 20’s or early 30’s.

Individual band times and stages where each band plays was marked on a large inflatable blow-up display board, or for a small fee you could obtain a printed schedule and map of the venue. The stages were set up in the parking lot around the main venue and this ensured no band's music was disrupted by the others.

Fans packed the front of stages as their favorite band performed and others got in the extremely long lines snaking through the venue for the chance to meet, photo and get autographs of other bands.

As one bands ends and others begin, the waves of fans would flow from one stage to the the next. This is a chance for fans to view a large number of their favorite bands in one day and get a sampling of others they may be interested in. Bands had their tents set up through the venue offering their wares and CD for purchase.
