Last Thursday evening the Tennessee Department of Tourists Development invited us to come enjoy an evening of Made in Tennessee Sampler. The evening began with visits to several dozen booths that represented the various regions of Tennessee and what they have to offer. Such place as Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Memphis and all points in between.
Representatives from local bakeries like Dutch Maid Bakery in Tracy City, as well as bigger attractions like Dollywood or the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge. Samples of the local specialty were available, like Moon Pies from Chattanooga to Jack Daniels Whiskey and GooGoo Cluster from Nashville.
The focus of this event was to bring in area travel agents, tour guides and travel bureaus in a show them what Tennessee has to offer. We were treated to a Southern Buffet dinner with such items as pork tenderloin, citrus brined turkey breast, spicy pork sausage baked beans, southern style close slaw, Mac-n-cheese, and of course cornbread. Dessert was pecan pie with Bourbon Carmel and fresh cream.
The evening of Tennessee Sampling would not be complete with a bit of foot-tapping, head-bobbing, soul-stirring country, blues and rock music. Damien Horne, recording artist, actor and part of the popular trio The Farm, took us on a musical journey across the state with song. He was followed by the Pure Roots performance, this group lead by Carl Jackson and including Chuck Wagon Gang, The Church Sisters, The Shotgun Rubies, and newcomer Corbin Hayslett. They gave us a taste of the new CD coming out next month called “Orthophonic Joy: The 1927 Bristol Sessions Revisited.” The music spoke to my southern roots, it flooded me with memories of watching the Grand Ole Opry with my mother growing up. Good times.
The evening included door prize give always from the various attractions and the big prize was a trip for two to Memphis, including air fare, hotel and attractions.
What a great sampling, I have been to the state many times and yet I see that there is still so much more for me to discover in this gem of the south, the birthplace of music in America.
