To cross the border or no

Now do you ever get the feeling that when you reach the border to another country that you have everything in hand. Or if not, what are you going to do. But if you are  tech-wizard you can apparently get out of trouble without worry. Apparently you can just present an iPad with a scanned image or a picture of your passport and you can cross the border.

Martin Reisch he was driving from Quebec to Vermont, so he was traveling from Canada to the U.S. So then he reached the border and realized that he had left his passport at home. So he flashed his driver's license and showed a scanned copy of his passport on his iPad.

Now normally the U.S. border agents says that you are not allowed to present a scanned copy of your passport at a time when you are trying to cross the border. But apparently the iPad image clarity was so good that they let Martin cross into the U.S.

So apparently if you present a copy of your passport on your iPad, then you are allowed to pass? I don't get it. But everyone involved in this is trying to cover their tracks. The U.S. Border agents state that Martin presented his drivers license and his birth certificate in order to cross the border. And he didn't present a scanned copy of his passport. But Martin has said that he doesn't agree with the story that the U.S. says that he presented his birth certificate and drivers license and he did present a scanned copy of his passport.

Someone dropped the ball here and we will see what the final say of this story is.
