Johnny Oduya Sports Nutz Video Emerges Today!

Johnny Oduya Sports Nutz Video Emerges Today!

Lost Sports Nutz from February 2010. This video is from the 2010 Winter Olympics, but it wasn’t published until today June 25th, 2013. It features of course, Susannah Collins and Samantha Raddock. And it’s a tribute to Stanley Cup champion and Sports Nutz favorite, Johnny Oduya.

As this video just went live on YouTube, I’m guessing we might be the first outlet to publish this...

CSN Chicago: Blackhawks Biggest Cheerleaders

CSN Chicago: Blackhawks Biggest Cheerleaders
I really do love the Chicago Blackhawks “hit the ice” introduction video. The CGI effects are top notch. However, the very first thing I noticed in the vid is Coach Quenneville’s faux “media session.” There are only three microphones placed under Coach Q: WGN TV, WGN Radio and Comcast SportsNet; the Blackhawks three broadcast partners. Now why would a front-runner franchise even bother doing this? Why have any corporate media logos? Or instead throw in more media outlets and make the fake presser look genuine? Still, this is ultimately meaningless minutia; at least compared to the more important thoughts that it provokes. If you’re a media outlet who also broadcasts a team regularly, you are no longer a true news-gathering agency. At least not in regards to that specific team. You are beholden to that franchise and your on-air talent are de facto PR representatives; not reporters or journalists...

WLS's Bruce Wolf, Susannah Collins & Meta Twitter Convos (UPDATE)

WLS's Bruce Wolf, Susannah Collins & Meta Twitter Convos (UPDATE)
Twitter is a wonderful and strange place. Public figures make very public statements. Some are meant prima facie, some are not. WLS radio host (and part-time practicing attorney, hence my usage of a legal term in the opening graph) Bruce Wolf seemingly took a social media shot at former Comcast SportsNet employee Susannah Collins this past weekend. If you take the tweet at stand-alone and face value, it looks like an attack on the relevance of another media professional. And ill-timed as it's published exactly one month to the day she was fired too...

Sports Nutz Creator Jimmy Chairman (Exclusive)
James Chairman or Jimmy Chairman is currently the New York Bureau Producer for E! News. He's also the creator of Sports Nutz, which Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz found controversial. The Sports Nutz videos were deemed grounds for dismissal of Comcast Sports Net reporter Susannah Collins. Today, you'll find a few videos that have been watched 60-90,000 times. The YouTube Channel, featuring 18 videos in total, has now been viewed close to half a million times! So let's meet the visionary behind the video series. And discuss the past, present and potential future of Sports Nutz...

Samantha Raddock talks potential Sports Nutz Reunion (Exclusive)

Samantha Raddock talks potential Sports Nutz Reunion (Exclusive)
When Chicago Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz decided the Sports Nutz videos were "controversial" enough to justify firing Comcast Sports Net reporter Susannah Collins, it brought a lot of attention to the Sports Nutz series. Most SN videos had previously only been viewed on YouTube 4-5,000 times. Today, you'll find a few videos that have been watched 60-90,000 times. The YouTube Channel, featuring 18 videos in total, has now been viewed close to half a million times! The extensive media coverage of the so-called "racy" sketch comedy videos led to a much bigger interest in them. However, we didn't hear much about "the other" woman in them: Samantha Raddock. Did you know she made a guest appearance on the Fox hit comedy That 70s Show? So let's meet Samantha Raddock, and see if a Sports Nutz reunion is in the works...

Susannah Collins as Che in the Trib (Update: Collins releases statement)

Susannah Collins as Che in the Trib (Update: Collins releases statement)
(UPDATE 5-7-13 11:50 A.M.: Susannah releases public statement on her own home page)

As most of you know by now, I had a slip-up last week on the air while covering the Blackhawks playoff series.  As a result of the attention it received, an old web-based sports comedy series I participated in several years ago came to light. The intention of that show was to present a satirical, tongue-in-cheek approach to sports but, unfortunately, some of the material it contained was off-color and offensive. I understand why some may have been offended by it and for this I am truly sorry.  To be clear, that show in no way reflects my personal opinions.

It has always been my dream to cover my hometown teams on the network I loved watching.  I have worked tirelessly to develop my skills as a sports reporter, anchor and host, and I want to thank the city of Chicago for allowing me that opportunity. The outpouring of support I have received is overwhelming and it will remain in my heart, as will Chicago.  Always.

Blackhawks Front Office: Reader Mail Reaction

Blackhawks Front Office: Reader Mail Reaction
(UPDATE 5-7-13 11:50 A.M.: Susannah releases public statement on her own home page) You and I love our hockey. We’re excited about the Chicago Blackhawks playoff series. However, one must separate the product on the ice from the corporate suits micro-managing it in a dictatorial way. The team is great; they’re kicking butt. The front office? Well, I’ve said enough about that lately. Here’s where I pass the microphone to you guys. The fact that they just raised ticket prices for the fourth time in six years isn't making them any friends. And Chicago has spoken, I’ve received a lot of great emails, tweets, texts, post comments etc. Here are some of the best. Finally, if you want a review of the best Sports Nutz videos, and a place to view them, see my Chicago Now teammate. The Mayor Daily does good work. Hopefully, one day as a society we can progress to a point where we no longer use a "z" to pluralize nouns. We’ll reach that mountain top! On to the mailbag:...

Susannah Collins, Blackhawks, media crush: I'm not sleeping much

Susannah Collins, Blackhawks, media crush: I'm not sleeping much
As you no doubt have heard, Susannah Collins was let go by Comcast SportsNet Chicago late Thursday night. As I reported immediately, it wasn’t CSN that terminated her employment, it was the Chicago Blackhawks. The order came from up on high within the Blackhawks organization. I knew this because I’ve covered the team for years and I know how the propaganda machine works at 1901 W. Madison. I know how hands-on, petty and paranoid the front office and Media Relations are. They’re Draconian about message control and hypocritical about sexual imagery. They’re especially hypocritical in their selling of that sexual imagery. They’ve crushed reporters in the past for no good reason other than they knew that they could. And I knew they did it again with Collins. I was the first one to report that it was the Blackhawks, and not CSN, behind this. A few on-air personalities from 670 The Score had my back instantly as Laurence Holmes, Joe Ostrowski and Herb Lawrence re-tweeted my story, and endorsed what I had to say. The next day, talk of Susannah Collins dominated The Score airwaves, and Score afternoon host Dan Bernstein, who has probably influenced me as much as any media member in this market, started saying the same thing I had said: this was the Blackhawks call...

Top 10 Chicago Sports Media Interviews

Top 10 Chicago Sports Media Interviews
We're close to the one year anniversary of Chicago Sports Media Watch. The inaugural post went live on April 20th, 2012 (yeah, 4-20 man! for all you stoners out there) To celebrate, I'm posting links to the top ten media interviews I conducted for this website. All media interviews are exclusives, because exclusive is how I roll. Ok, not really. I actually enjoy eating spray cheese and my all-time favorite movie Team America: World Police is filled with extremely low-brow humor. But the fact still holds, these media interviews were one-on-one Q&A. The interview subjects of the past year who didn't retweet me, after I nicely asked them to do so, were automatically eliminated from top ten consideration. But "Hey, thanks for coming!!!!" Stay tuned to CSMW this week as I will have exclusives with University of Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas and WFLD FOX Reporter Dionne Miller posted in the next couple days. The order below is totally random; these media interviews are not ranked by importance or page views or social media response. They are just the ten I enjoyed the most. (side note: here's my top ten media criticisms of the past year)...

Susannah Collins talks Blackhawks, Mr. T, Belushi and more (exclusive)

Susannah Collins talks Blackhawks, Mr. T, Belushi and more (exclusive)
(UPDATE 5-7-13 11:50 A.M.: Susannah releases public statement on her own home page) UPDATE 5-3-13: Susannah is fired by Comcast SportsNet. This link explains why I believe the Blackhawks themselves had more to do with her dismissal than CSN!!! Susannah Collins was hired by Comcast SportsNet Chicago this past September. You know her best from Chicago Blackhawks broadcasts; but Collins also covers Bulls, White Sox and Cubs for the network. CSN has broadcast partnerships with all four Chicago teams.  Susannah Collins became an internet superstar last week thanks to ’80s icon Mr. T (watch here to see him score a goal) It was one of the best moments in shoot-the-puck history; right up there with this one. Susannah Collins is both an Illini and a local. She grew up in the western suburb of Downers Grove, IL and graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 2001. For a full biography go here. There’s so much going on in April with Chicago sports, and at CSN. So what better time than now to talk Blackhawks, Bulls, Derrick Rose, hockey and more with a famous CSN anchor/reporter? (Yes, that’s a rhetorical question) And yeah, we discuss Jim Belushi and Mr. T too. You can follow Susannah Collins on Twitter and on Facebook (She may or may not be on Google+ as well, but I didn’t look because no one cares about Google+)...
