There’s been a lot of bad news surrounding Notre Dame
football the past couple years. Manti Te’o, Lennay Kakua
, Tommy Rees
, Lizzy Seeberg
, Declan Sullivan
, Michael Floyd
and now, just this past weekend, starting QB Everett Golson
. (Related: Brian Kelly
discusses post Everett Golson QB situation
Throw in the embarrassment at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide
in the college football
national title game, and Brian Kelly
flirting with NFL
head coaching gigs, and you have enough drama to fill a full season of Friday Night Lights.
Heck, there’s enough material for a few episodes generated by the quarterback position alone: Everett Golson
, Gunner Kiel
, Tommy Rees.
and Jimmy Clausen
was pretty much a real life version of J.D. McCoy from FNL.
And I haven’t even mentioned that star Defensive Lineman Louis Nix
III is now Twitter BFF with porn star Emily Austin
. Not that there’s anything wrong that!
What red-blooded American male wouldn’t want to get to know Ms. Austin! (And why am I using all these exclamation points!) However, at a socially ultra-conservative Catholic school like Notre Dame
, it’s probably frowned upon to have one of your marquee athletes as social media
buddies with the star of Innocent Until Proven Filthy 11
So with all the off-the-field noise and distractions at the most marquee program in college football
history, how does coach Brian Kelly
Time for a Paul M. Banks Chicago Sports Media Watch interview...
No matter what NFL
team you follow, we all have this in common today.
Your team, each and every of the 32 NFL
clubs (or at least every team with a pick among the first 32), did not draft Manti Teo
in the first round last night.
And that is a wonderful thing.
Twitter lit up with jokes about Manti Teo
being an imaginary first round draft choice last night. Lennay Kakua hoax references were plentiful on social media.
And when the first round of the NFL Draft
ended, we were all free to enjoy the schadenfreude of Manti Teo
not hearing his name called. Perhaps The Onion
did it best. However, this is about much more than disliking an overrated college football
player. This is about much more than disliking Notre Dame
. Lots of football fans have distaste for both of those entities...
The talk of Notre Dame NFL
draft picks (potentially) starts with Manti Te’o. And last night on NFL
Network, a panel of their “experts” mocked Te’o to the Chicago Bears
at #20. FACEPALM.
Good Lord, please don’t.
Can “Touchdown Jesus” intervene here and prevent the dumbest jock this side of Ryan Lochte
from coming to Chicago? Actually, it was NFL
Network analyst Melissa Stark
who made the Te’o pick, and I’ll try to keep our discussion of Manti Te’o as limited as possible for this evening. I am more sick of Te’o talk than I am Tim Tebow
and Jeremy Lin
COMBINED. And that’s really saying something.
Because every time I hear the name Manti Te'o I channel Jay Cutler: DONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN'T CARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Network’s leading draft expert Mike Mayock
moderated the panel, and in his one and only mock draft he mocked Te'o to Chicago.
I swear to God, I will "c*** punt" (CC Rebecca Martinson) the next person who mock drafts Te'o to Chicago
If the Bears do actually pick Manti tonight, then again credit Becca Martinson: "just go ahead and punch yourself in the f***ing face so that I don't have to find you, and do it for you."
Mayock predictably went Eric Fisher of Central Michigan #1 to Kansas City. Because Mayock
gets as excited about Eric Fisher as I get over Kate Upton
This week we look at where numerous publications have Notre Dame players, including Manti Te'o, going in the NFL Draft. Many "experts" have a couple mocked to the Bears, find out who! Next week we'll look at who various publications have mocked to the Bears at #20.
But first, Colin Cowherd to WMVP 1000 ESPN radio?
Get ready to hear more Colin Cowherd on ESPN’s local stations. That could mean you, Chicago.
It’s a definite possibility. Much like it does with the Greenberg-Golic morning show, there is talk that ESPN wants to give Cowherd more visibility on its locally-owned stations.
Chicago could be the next major market to get “The Herd,” whose show airs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. ET. Last Thursday, WMVP-AM 1000 fired Harry Teinowitz
from its afternoon team that also includes Carmen DeFalco and John Jurkovic.
It is expected that ESPN 1000 will shift the Tom Waddle-Marc Silverman duo from 9 a.m.-1 p.m
. to afternoon drive. That would leave an opening to slide in Cowherd’s national show in the morning slot...
A lot of great reactions on Twitter yesterday to the Notre Dame
Manti Te’o fake dead girlfriend saga broken open by Deadspin.
The best line I came up with is “ND
AD: “exclusively an online girlfriend” A.J. McCarron has a Miss Alabama
, Johnny Manziel a model
, Te’o had a cyberphoto.”
After being irrelevant for a couple Jenn Sterger
has come up twice this week. You might remember Sterger as being “discovered” by Brent Musburger a few years ago when the ESPN cameras caught her and her fake assets hanging out of her Florida State
t-shirt at a nationally televised game. Musburger made a comment (“1,500 red-blooded Americans just decided to apply to Florida State
”) about Sterger very similar to what he said about A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend and Miss Alabama Katherine Webb on the night of the national title game
Sterger parlayed her 15 minutes of fame (read: boobs) into a social media
sensation and later a sports journalism career that included stops at SI, ABC, Fuel TV, a show on Versus and the New York Jets in stadium hostess. And of course, it all came crashing down. Just like it did for Manti Te’o and Notre Dame
By now you’ve heard the story which dominated sports headlines: Notre Dame
inside linebacker and Heisman runner-up (not to mention winner of numerous defensive player of the year awards) Manti Te’o had a girlfriend who died during the season
. And today we learned that she never even existed at all. It was all just a hoax. The University stands behind Te’o. Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick has hitched his wagons to Te’o. So, are we to believe that an honors student who graduated early from ND
was nieve enough to fall for this? And too macho to admit that he “met” his “girlfriend” online? And this explains why he played so poorly in the national championship game?
Or was he in on the fix- cruelly and twisted as he manipulated people’s emotions to gather sympathy and publicity to increase his profile and bolster his future earnings potential? Isn’t Lance Armstrong glad this came up today to take some heat off him. What we do know is that both ND
and Te’o knew of this fraud weeks ago and didn’t reveal it. Deadspin had to break the story
. There are balls of lies all over this charade. And perhaps we’ll never really know the truth...
Notre Dame released the following statement surrounding the story of Manti Te'o's dead girlfriend hoax. The news is traveling like wildfire on the internet and could be like the ESPN Sarah Phillips story
times 1,000. ND stated:
On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.
Capitalizing on tragedy for inspiration and publicity is not new at Notre Dame. George Gipp and "win one for the Gipper" were quite different in real life than it was portrayed by Hollywood
. Today, Deadspin
took another giant step forward in their journalistic reputation. They laid out the facts...
The father of Notre Dame star linebacker Manti Te’o, blacklisted the Honolulu Star-Advertiser because of how the newspaper portrayed his son on the front page following the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 42-14 demolishing of the Fighting Irish in the BCS National Championship Game. Te’0, a Hawaii native, is likely to be a first round NFL draft... Read more »
As usual, there’s a lot of hype and anticipation heading into next college football season regarding Notre Dame. It’s not like last season where gridiron experts are projecting them into a BCS bowl, instead it’s more about their schedule (how tough it is) and how NFL ready some of their talent is. Especially keep an... Read more »
