There’s been a lot of bad news surrounding Notre Dame
football the past couple years. Manti Te’o, Lennay Kakua
, Tommy Rees
, Lizzy Seeberg
, Declan Sullivan
, Michael Floyd
and now, just this past weekend, starting QB Everett Golson
. (Related: Brian Kelly
discusses post Everett Golson QB situation
Throw in the embarrassment at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide
in the college football
national title game, and Brian Kelly
flirting with NFL
head coaching gigs, and you have enough drama to fill a full season of Friday Night Lights.
Heck, there’s enough material for a few episodes generated by the quarterback position alone: Everett Golson
, Gunner Kiel
, Tommy Rees.
and Jimmy Clausen
was pretty much a real life version of J.D. McCoy from FNL.
And I haven’t even mentioned that star Defensive Lineman Louis Nix
III is now Twitter BFF with porn star Emily Austin
. Not that there’s anything wrong that!
What red-blooded American male wouldn’t want to get to know Ms. Austin! (And why am I using all these exclamation points!) However, at a socially ultra-conservative Catholic school like Notre Dame
, it’s probably frowned upon to have one of your marquee athletes as social media
buddies with the star of Innocent Until Proven Filthy 11
So with all the off-the-field noise and distractions at the most marquee program in college football
history, how does coach Brian Kelly
Time for a Paul M. Banks Chicago Sports Media Watch interview...
During his first two years in South Bend, Brian Kelly
coached Notre Dame
to a 16-10 record, and one bowl win. In his third season, the Irish went undefeated (12-0) in the regular season only to get throttled by the Alabama Crimson Tide
in the national title game. So Kelly does have a BCS Championship game appearance on his resume, even though they only showed up on paper; they didn't seem to show up for the actual game. During Kelly’s tenure, the most prestigious program in college football
has seen a lot of negative attention; mostly off-the-field.
In just three years at the helm, there have been eight incidences of bad press
to hit Kelly’s Fighting Irish
program. Some of the negative publicity is warranted, some is overblown. Three were essentially the same thing (underage alcohol citation/arrests) and two involved student fatalities. And one involved the fatality of a fake person. Heck, the ND quarterbacks alone
have provided enough drama lately to fuel a whole season of Friday Night Lights
Let’s go through all eight...
It could easily be the most watched college football
game of all time: the BCS National title game, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish
vs. the Alabama Crimson Tide
. The media
hype has been ridiculous; ESPN and the rest of the press
have been talking about this game forever. Imagine what the publicity for the Super Bowl will be like this year.
So here’s a guide, with links to everything to prepare for the big game...
During the Civil War, you often literally had brother vs. brother. According to the Alabama Crimson Tide
fight song they are “Dixie’s football pride.” And Indiana (despite the fact that it often votes with the old Confederacy these days in elections) was a Union state. So this Notre Dame
vs. Alabama national title game matchup does have a bit of a Civil War feel to it.
Here are two brothers who fit the mold: Thomas Rayam Bama 90′ and I-Hardy Rayam Notre Dame
80′ are the only brother combination that played for both Notre Dame
and Alabama. Ironically, some local people don’t understand why some national news source have not given this article some attention. Hardy Rayam, graduated from Notre Dame
1980′ BBA and was on Notre Dame
’s 1977 Football National Championship Team. Hardy Rayam is also a Two Times Liver Transplant Survivor, since 1997 (PSC-Walter Payton)...
Whether they watch to root for them, or watch to root against them- they’re watching. Notre Dame draws huge numbers. They drew the biggest overnight rating of the 2012 college football season, outdistancing the previous high for the season, Alabama-LSU on CBS. Last night, the ESPN-produced Notre Dame-USC game on ABC received a stunning 10.3... Read more »
Today was Notre Dame media
day, and with it Brian Kelly
addressed the media
contingent concerning the be here before you know it 2012 season. The Irish open up in Ireland; taking on Navy in Dublin in the Emerald Isle Classic. The Irish still don’t have a quarterback set, and have a bit of a Hobson’s Choice type situation going on there.
They also have a brutal schedule this season, making it a challenge for them to reach 8 victories for the third straight year...
As usual, there’s a lot of hype and anticipation heading into next college football season regarding Notre Dame. It’s not like last season where gridiron experts are projecting them into a BCS bowl, instead it’s more about their schedule (how tough it is) and how NFL ready some of their talent is. Especially keep an... Read more »
Twitter is one of the greatest inventions ever for a sportswriter. It’s a chance to obtain legitimate quotes from players and coaches without actually being at the stadium or even having a press credential. And sometimes the quotes are much more interesting than what you hear on gameday, because they haven’t been filtered by Public... Read more »
