ESPN College Gameday in Evanston! Send us your Signs!

ESPN College Gameday in Evanston! Send us your Signs!
ESPN College Gameday is officially headed to Ryan Field in Evanston. Not be confused with the Fox Sports 1 anchor named Ryan Field. Now that Gameday will be here, I want to see your signs! The best ones will be posted here later. ESPN College Gameday has been to a Northwestern “home game” before. Remember the goofy “everyone drives the same direction” battle at Wrigley Field in 2010? Although that aspect of the contest was a total Chicago Cubs like fiasco, the game was a huge marketing/publicity success, as you had many moments in the vein of Mr. Cub Ernie Banks singing “Go U Northwestern” at Clark and Addison. In the game itself, Ron Zook and the Illinois Fighting Illini smoked the Wildcats 48-22 as Mikel Leshoure rushed for an Illinois school record 330 yards. This time, ESPN College Gameday will see Northwestern host the Red Menace, the Evil Empire of Ohio State, who enter the game as just a four point favorite. It’s the best two teams in the Big Ten no doubt. (Certainly, the Buckeyes and Wildcats have looked like the cream of the league crop thus far) However, this is still very much a Rocky vs. Drago match-up...

Illini, Northwestern hoops schedule for ESPN, CBS National TV Released

Illini, Northwestern hoops schedule for ESPN, CBS National TV Released
I know it’s hard to think about college basketball when a.) it’s so freakin hot outside and b.) college football appetizers are served tomorrow night, with the main course just two days after that. However, the Big Ten announced its 2013-14 basketball conference schedule, with at least 49 games to be televised by CBS Sports or an ESPN Network. Remaining network assignments will be announced at a later date. Obviously, this will be highly subject to change, depending on how the teams perform, but if you want to grab your day planner and write down what you want to do in February and March, yes on a Late August afternoon, I won’t stop you. I’m certainly not expecting you to do that, but I won’t stop you either. Let’s look at where the Illini and Northwestern fit in...

Sharknado prompts San Jose Sharks to ZING ESPN! Fox Sports 1 jumps in

Sharknado prompts San Jose Sharks to ZING ESPN! Fox Sports 1 jumps in
As we're in the midst of the summer lull, no football, hockey or basketball, it's amazing what I'm finding to write about. Last summer we had the Olympics. The year before that, the Women's World Cup helped fill the gap of July boredom. This year... ...neither the Chicago Cubs nor the Chicago White Sox are playing actual Major League Baseball this year, so like many Chicagoans, I’m on #BaseballHiatus. And this isn't summer 2012 or 2011, when I had Hope Solo on my television every other day. Therefore, Enter Sharknado. What is Sharknado? It’s like “Deep Blue Sea” only much less watchable and way dumbed down. Oh and Tara Reid is the star of the SyFy “film.” Both Sharknado and Tara Reid inspired approximately 4.7 million Twitter jokes Thursday night. And it prompted whoever works The Evil Empire’s Twitter account to take a little swipe at the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. The hockey team fired back at the DeathStar for their lack of hockey coverage. Of course, there’s so little hockey coverage on ESPN! Because hockey doesn’t have any broadcast deals with ESPN! Bristol doesn’t cover sports they don't also make money off broadcasting. The Sharks took exception...

Sarah Spain likely leaving ESPN 1000 for Fox Sports 1

Sarah Spain likely leaving ESPN 1000 for Fox Sports 1
WMVP’s Sarah Spain is most likely leaving the Chicago sports talk radio station for a new gig with Fox Sports 1. A source close to Spain claimed that this deal is in the works. We don't have official word yet, but all signs point that way. The ESPN 1000 on-air personality is potentially bolting the talk radio station for a greater, expanded role with the new television network. The higher ups at Fox Sports 1 are hoping that this new network will be able to complete with the World Wide Leader: ESPN. Sarah Spain is one of many sports personalities being scouted for Fox Sports 1. They’ve already made a marquee hire in Charissa Thompson. And they’re looking to add a considerable amount of staff between now and network launch August 17th. I really don't see anything special in Spain's work. I do not find her to be exceedingly talented. Then again, I'm not FS1. Maybe they see something I don't. Spain tweeted yesterday that she was flying to Los Angeles; presumably to finalize/further discuss the deal with Fox Sports. Sarah Spain has previous experience living in Los Angeles working for Fox Sports. She used to produce the network’s “The Final Score” highlights show...

ESPN finds Jay Cutler at fault for Robert Griffin III injury

ESPN finds Jay Cutler at fault for Robert Griffin III injury
ESPN continues to dumb down it’s audience and make people less informed about sports.  Today the network actually posed this question for its panel “How much do you blame Jay Cutler for RG III’s injury?” Yes, this is not parody but a serious attempt at “journalism” by the WWL. What a way to “cover” the Robert Griffin III surgery that took place today. screen grab courtesy of Twitter @WaneDog...

Matt Millen's PSU bias should cost him his ESPN gig
Guest post by Ed Cmar of The Sports Bank and Inside Hockey Matt Millen, former Penn State University (PSU) and Oakland Raiders star player and former Detroit Lions General Manager (GM) – arguably the worst National Football League (NFL) GM in history – appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter today to analyze and react to the results...
