2013 Big Ten Basketball Media Day Helps Me Through Football Season

2013 Big Ten Basketball Media Day Helps Me Through Football Season
Big Ten Basketball Media Day is literally just hours away now. THANK GOD. It helps me. This idea gets me through football season. Big Ten Basketball Media Day helps me, by acting as a healing mechanism. It's unofficially opening day, signaling hope anew; and rescue from the despair of football season. Big Ten basketball season cannot get here fast enough. Especially for someone like me, who covers two college football teams, Northwestern and Illinois who are #10 and #11 in everybody’s conference power rankings. Then again college basketball season is always something that never gets here soon enough for me. I prefer college hoops over college football. And I should; I attended two college hoops power houses (University of Illinois '99, Michigan State MBA). College basketball, not the NBA or NFL or college football "is my bag baby." I love college hoops as much as I despise Facebook Fan pages. I like to watch college basketball as much as I like to ignore invitations to "Like" Facebook Fan Pages. I enjoy watching March Madness as much as I enjoy never clicking on mommy-blogs. (Seriously, is the mommy-blogger craze over yet??)...

Big Ten Coaches Izzo, Matta give high praise for Bill Carmody

Big Ten Coaches Izzo, Matta give high praise for Bill Carmody
The firing of Northwestern coach Bill Carmody was a hot topic today at the Big Ten Tournament. And various Big Ten coaches expressed their support of Carmody and how sad and disappointed they were that he was dismissed. Ohio State's Thad Matta and Michigan State's Tom Izzo were especially supportive and opinionated in their responses. The Big Ten coaching cadre is a fraternity, a brotherhood, and in the strongest conference in the nation Big Ten coaches showed that they have each other's back today...

BTN's Tim Doyle: worst. sportscaster. EVER

BTN's Tim Doyle: worst. sportscaster. EVER
You listen to Tim McCarver, Skip Bayless, or even worse yet, Jemele Hill and it makes you wonder “how does this person have a job?” Not only do they have a broadcasting gig, but it’s one with a very large footprint. There is no justice in the world. The Big Ten Network version of that is Tim Doyle. Like Dick Vitale, he ruins every game he calls. He’s so bad that he makes CBS 2′s Ryan Baker look good by comparison. And that’s really hard to do because Baker pulls off the impossible combination of being both bland/boring and annoying/irritating at the same time. Remember this is a criticism of Tim Doyle the broadcaster, not Tim Doyle the person. I don't know Doyle personally, he could be a great guy for all I know. However, his work I cannot know, and his work I cannot stand. So, let's be civil and remember there's no need for fist-fights. In Doyle's exact own words “The business that we are in, sometimes we have to be hard on people or give our opinions.” Update: Doyle discussed the altercation on 670 The Score Friday morning, and his spot is a MUST LISTEN....

Media really high on Big Ten Basketball this year

Media really high on Big Ten Basketball this year
The Big Ten has been pretty weak in college football this season. That’s obvious. But as down as football might be, Big Ten college basketball is up just as much, perhaps even more. The league has three of the top five in the coaches poll, and five teams in the top 25. The Hoosiers are number one in the poll, with the Buckeyes number four and the Wolverines number five. Today was the conference’s media day, held right here in Chicago. And here’s who the media picked for to finish at the top of the league, and to make the all-Big Ten team...
