Northwestern graduate Britt McHenry is the latest Medill School of Journalism product to join the World Wide Leader. She's based in D.C. but on St. Patrick's Day (she indeed has the luck of the Irish) she will start doing national work for ESPN. More Britt McHenry photos and career bio at this link. And check out the gallery in this post too. -Screen grab below is from Fox Sports Live (their version of SportsCenter) on Fox Sports 1. When he visited Northwestern, I asked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Coach Richard Pitino about the top trending topic in college basketball this season- that would be Twitter. Quite a few big name college hoops coaches publicly discussed social media and the adverse effect it’s having on their programs and players: Tom Izzo, Thad Matta, Pitino's Dad Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Following the Golden Gophers 54-48 win at Northwestern, Richard Pitino gave a very colorful and insightful answer to my question....

Best of Northwestern Basketball Social Media Night vs Indiana

Best of Northwestern Basketball Social Media Night vs Indiana
Northwestern basketball won at Indiana 54-47 back on January 18th, but the Hoosiers came into Welsh-Ryan Arena tonight and avenged that loss by winning at NU by a score of 61-56. Northwestern basketball was missing it's second leading scorer Jershon Cobb, who might return this season. Or he might not be back this year. He's out indefinitely, and he's been dealing with a knee issue as well. "Certainly it's a huge blow to take anybody's second leading scorer off your team," said Chris Collins in the postgame press conference. "Certainly no one wants to be out there more than Jershon." It's the fifth straight loss for NU, who's postseason hopes are fading fast. The Hoosiers boast a likely top ten NBA Draft pick in Noah Vonleh and a potential first rounder in 2015 in Troy Williams. The Wildcats were short-handed and IU just had too much talent for them to overcome. The 'Cats were missing their back-up center Nikola Cerina who was suspended for throwing a punch on Ohio State's Amir Williams on Wednesday. And their starting center, Alex Olah was playing on two sprained ankles. So they really went in to this one short-handed. Collins' team played great team defense, and were able to stop some of Indiana's weapons. However, you can't stop everybody. And they fell to Tom Crean a.k.a. basketball Ron Zook. "When you're under-manned you gotta live with something," Collins said. So that's the Northwestern basketball side of Northwestern basketball social media night. Let's get to the social media side of Northwestern basketball social media night...

Watch this and Feel MUCH Better about Twitter Trolls and HATE Comments

I was just talking about this exact topic Friday night before this originally aired. Why is there so much hate in America today? Or at least why is so much hate expressed online? And why by SO MANY IDIOTS? Who can’t even COMPREHEND BASIC FACTS????? Then I saw the Salinger documentary which does a fantastic job exploring how insane people consume and then react to media products before them. You then understand why J.D. Salinger was a recluse somewhat, given the way so many of his “fans” interpret his work. I have the same problem. I’m no media mogul by any means, but I’m enough of a public personality (or at least insane people think so) that in the past two months I’ve been told I hope you die by fans of: South Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame and Michigan. I was told “I hope you’re the next person to die in a terrorist attack” on 9/11/13...

Illinois Football Social Media Day sees Narrow Victory over SIU

Illinois Football Social Media Day sees Narrow Victory over SIU
Today, Illinois football ended their nine game losing streak. And they did it on Social Media Day at Memorial Stadium. Well, they just barely survived: winning 42-34 over the SIU Salukis in a game that went down to the wire. Unfortunately for Illinois football, who reside in the Big Ten, a BCS power conference, just escaping versus a FCS squad, and a middle of the road one and that, doesn’t cut it. Illini Coach Tim Beckman was on the hot seat entering this game. It’s surface of the planet Venus now; after outgaining a FCS opponent at home by just 57 yards and winning by a slim margin. (More on what went down on the field and what it means for Illinois football here) Let's get to the tweets today (saving my own for the bottom)...

Illini Social Media Day Kicks Off Illini Football Season Saturday

Illini Social Media Day Kicks Off Illini Football Season Saturday
We have real football again! Finally. College football season openers are this Saturday, August 31st.  Illini football takes on FCS school Southern Illinois as part of Social Media Day. All Illini fans Liking the official Fighting Illini football Facebook page and following the @Illini Football Twitter account will be entered to win a personalized Illinois jersey. Just enter by halftime Saturday. Also, Facebook fans and Twitter followers can win a pair of tickets to the Sept. 14th Chicago Homecoming versus the Washington Huskies at Soldier Field. The winners will be announced at Memorial Stadium and on Illini football social media pages at the end of the third quarter versus SIU. Obviously, this match-up would be more intriguing in basketball. Say in a tournament in March. However, Salukis football did produce Bart Scott, the famous former Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets linebacker who now has a new NFL pregame show on CBS Sports. (it debuts September 8th) Tim Beckman was on conference call today to preview the game on Saturday...

Media Notebook: Sharknado, The Score, Jay Mariotti, Hub Arkush

Media Notebook: Sharknado, The Score, Jay Mariotti, Hub Arkush
Pro Football Weekly may have folded, but Hub Arkush is still going strong. You can hear him on 670 The Score, and he’s going to be doing some work now for the Chicago Sun-Times. By the way, I still never bought that excuse about the NFL lockout being the cause of PFW’s demise. The lockout cost us the Hall of Fame preseason exhibition, OTAs and mini-camp. It terminated one preseason game of one season; and no real games. I don’t have the books, so I can’t say, but really that makes no sense. I don’t get it. -Speaking of the Sun-Times, their most polarizing alum, and everyone’s favorite villain, Jay Mariotti is back. An open letter from Jay himself reads: I’m excited to launch a multimedia production that I believe will be the next digital prototype for sports commentators and columnists. Welcome to The Mariotti Show, a cross-platform Web presentation (mariottishow.com) featuring live streaming of my daily radio program — Monday through Friday, noon to 3 p.m. ET — wrapped around my long-form columns, quick-cycle takes, breaking stories, videos, audience interaction and other 24/7 content from someone who has done it all and seen it all in sports media. Humble, reserved and grounded as always, Jay! #YouStayClassy -Haha. The picture leading this post is exactly how I feel when I look at Urban Meyer. It includes  Northwestern University Director of Digital and Social Communications Doug Meffley. He’s also the voice of the Chicago Bandits. It was taken while the Ohio State Buckeyes Coach was at the podium during Big Ten Media Days a couple weeks ago at the Hilton Towers. Meffley was moderating Q&A...

Matt Garza gets ANGRY, Misogynist on Social Media

Matt Garza gets ANGRY, Misogynist on Social Media
(UPDATE: Garza sort of apologizes):  "I appreciate the love baseball fans, sorry I let my competitive edge out, guess people thought athletes don't care. Don't like me don't follow." If 1967 was the "Summer of Love," 1977 the "Summer of Sam" and 2001 the "Summer of the Shark," we still need a nickname for 2013. I'll suggest "Summer of Cubs Twitter Idiocy." Dave Sappelt, Ian Stewart and now Matt Garza. Ok, that's admittedly a bit of a stretch. Sappy Sappelt did his terrible 1950s era women drivers' comedy routine on Twitter in the preseason, Stewart was not with the parent club when he had his pity party melt down, and Matt Garza is a couple weeks removed from the Chicago Cubs now. Still his Twitter rant makes himself a prime candidate for future sensitivity training. And a social media apology. So I guess we can call this the "Year of Very Recent Cubs Making Social Media Missteps." Which is nowhere near as catchy. Matt Garza is the latest to do something that will inevitably spur the "My Twitter account was hacked" excuse later. Let's take a look at what exactly went down. This happened just hours ago. The tweets of Matt Garza are protected, and I don't have access. Luckily, "The Outside Corner" does...

Sharknado prompts San Jose Sharks to ZING ESPN! Fox Sports 1 jumps in

Sharknado prompts San Jose Sharks to ZING ESPN! Fox Sports 1 jumps in
As we're in the midst of the summer lull, no football, hockey or basketball, it's amazing what I'm finding to write about. Last summer we had the Olympics. The year before that, the Women's World Cup helped fill the gap of July boredom. This year... ...neither the Chicago Cubs nor the Chicago White Sox are playing actual Major League Baseball this year, so like many Chicagoans, I’m on #BaseballHiatus. And this isn't summer 2012 or 2011, when I had Hope Solo on my television every other day. Therefore, Enter Sharknado. What is Sharknado? It’s like “Deep Blue Sea” only much less watchable and way dumbed down. Oh and Tara Reid is the star of the SyFy “film.” Both Sharknado and Tara Reid inspired approximately 4.7 million Twitter jokes Thursday night. And it prompted whoever works The Evil Empire’s Twitter account to take a little swipe at the NHL’s San Jose Sharks. The hockey team fired back at the DeathStar for their lack of hockey coverage. Of course, there’s so little hockey coverage on ESPN! Because hockey doesn’t have any broadcast deals with ESPN! Bristol doesn’t cover sports they don't also make money off broadcasting. The Sharks took exception...

Chicago Bulls Dominant! Ranking Local Sports Team Twitter Presence

Chicago Bulls Dominant! Ranking Local Sports Team Twitter Presence
I don’t have a lot of Twitter followers, but there are two professional sports teams among my group. And with that designation, they get to enjoy my substantial stream of funny Patrick Kane pictures and hilarious Jay Cutler memes. These two teams are the Chicago Bulls, and their arch-rival the Detroit Pistons. (Keep your enemies close, right?) Coincidentally, the Chicago Bulls have a dominant advantage in Twitter presence among local sports franchises. I listed and ranked them all by number of Twitter followers; as of June 29th, 2013, late afternoon. The Bulls lead the Blackhawks by an overwhelming margin. And then there’s a big drop-off to the Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Fire and Wolves. Therefore, other local sports teams, maybe you should take a lesson from the Bulls and follow me? (@paulmbanks) "I’m just Kidding like Jason. Unless you're gonna do it." CC Nelly. There are just two major college athletic programs that follows me. Marquette and Illinois. Coincidentally, the alma maters of myself and David Kmiecik, The Sports Bank's second major writer. Northwestern? Hello, where are you guys? Well, maybe there really isn’t any rhyme or reason to the follow/defollow/unfollow/follow back world is there? That’s arbitrary and up for debate. However, numbers don’t lie. And I parsed the numbers for you, with all official accounts linked (so you can easily find each team account). I also show you how each Chicago team stacks up against the biggest franchise names in their respective leagues...

Chicago Bulls media tweet about NBA Draft Night

Chicago Bulls media tweet about NBA Draft Night
The Chicago Bulls selected Tony Snell out of New Mexico tonight with the 20th pick in the NBA Draft. The Bulls pick again in the second round, #49. I'll be back later with reaction to that pick. I'll also be doing an in-depth profile of both Snell and the #49 pick later. Will link them here. Also, I'll have reaction/statements from Gar Forman and John Paxson on both picks too. Fun fact: newly minted Chicago Bulls guard Tony Snell was actually born in 1991, the same year as the first Bulls NBA Championship. He also has 4.9% body fat...
