Northwestern graduate Britt McHenry is the latest Medill School of Journalism product to join the World Wide Leader. She's based in D.C. but on St. Patrick's Day (she indeed has the luck of the Irish) she will start doing national work for ESPN.

-Screen grab below is from Fox Sports Live (their version of SportsCenter) on Fox Sports 1. When he visited Northwestern, I asked University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Coach Richard Pitino about the top trending topic in college basketball this season- that would be Twitter. Quite a few big name college hoops coaches publicly discussed social media and the adverse effect it’s having on their programs and players: Tom Izzo, Thad Matta, Pitino's Dad Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Following the Golden Gophers 54-48 win at Northwestern, Richard Pitino gave a very colorful and insightful answer to my question.
Yesterday was college football's National Signing Day and with it Illinois Football Coach Tim Beckman unveiled his latest recruiting class. Here to break down it with me is Illini recruiting expert Taylor Rooks of Fox Sports Next. We're going to find the bright side in Illini football recruiting. Yes, Rooks is talented enough to pull of such an accomplishment. Finding the silver lining in an otherwise bleak situation.
During Beckman's Signing Day press conference he said something rather unintelligent about the city of Chicago. It was self-aggrandizing and took a direct shot at Northwestern and Pat Fitzgerald.
This ended up overshadowing the other news on signing day as I received a very high volume of messages (texts, tweets, direct, emails etc) that all said essentially the same thing. Those messages derided the intelligence and vocational competency of Tim Beckman. And most of the messages said very little beyond that.
It's understandable as Beckman's boastful Chicagoland comment deriding NU seems rather non-sensical. Recruiting service 24/7 has Colorado, Purdue, Illinois and Washington State as the lowest-rated 2014 classes from the power five leagues...
Another Chicago Tribune writer is leaving for another very high traffic website. A source within the Tribune Company told me recently that long time baseball columnist and national baseball writer Phil Rogers is leaving the Trib for MLB
First, we had news of Vaughn McClure leaving the Midwest’s most prominent newspaper
for a high profile “digital medium” or “digital platform” (that’s cliched corporatespeak for “a website.”)
Now Rogers departs for the primary internet home for baseball...
Chicago Tribune Fighting Illini
reporter Vaughn McClure is leaving the paper for ESPN
Atlanta. McClure, who was previously a Chicago Bears
beat reporter, will be covering the NFL
again; this time he’ll handle the Atlanta Falcons.
Before taking the ATL job, McClure was to handle the Chicago Bulls
beat once the NBA
Remember a few months ago when I ranked all the Chicago college and professional teams by followers for their official Twitter
accounts? Well, here it is again, if you want to re-visit.
And today, I bring you the sequel. Ranking those same programs and franchises by web traffic.
The metric? Alexa.com, a site owned by Amazon. There are other web traffic rankings sites, but Alexa may be the most reliable. And they’re not that entirely reliable either. If you install the Alexa toolbar in your browser, the site you run will see it’s rankings surge. Somehow Alexa figures that out.
But the toolbar is really cool, because if you have it, you automatically the see traffic ranking of EVERY site you go to. The Alexa ranking is a 3-month global measurement. And next to the worldwide ranking, you’ll see the website’s ranking in the nation it’s based.
And you can check the profile in depth on their home page too...
Pro Football Weekly may have folded, but Hub Arkush is still going strong. You can hear him on 670 The Score, and he’s going to be doing some work now for the Chicago Sun-Times. By the way, I still never bought that excuse about the NFL lockout being the cause of PFW’s demise. The lockout cost us the Hall of Fame preseason exhibition, OTAs and mini-camp. It terminated one preseason game of one season; and no real games. I don’t have the books, so I can’t say, but really that makes no sense. I don’t get it.
-Speaking of the Sun-Times, their most polarizing alum, and everyone’s favorite villain, Jay Mariotti is back. An open letter from Jay himself
I’m excited to launch a multimedia production that I believe will be the next digital prototype for sports commentators and columnists. Welcome to The Mariotti Show, a cross-platform Web presentation (mariottishow.com) featuring live streaming of my daily radio program — Monday through Friday, noon to 3 p.m. ET — wrapped around my long-form columns, quick-cycle takes, breaking stories, videos, audience interaction and other 24/7 content from someone who has done it all and seen it all in sports media.
Humble, reserved and grounded as always, Jay! #YouStayClassy
-Haha. The picture leading this post is exactly how I feel when I look at Urban Meyer
. It includes Northwestern
University Director of Digital and Social Communications Doug Meffley. He’s also the voice of the Chicago Bandits. It was taken while the Ohio State Buckeyes
Coach was at the podium during Big Ten
Media Days a couple weeks ago at the Hilton Towers. Meffley was moderating Q&A...
I started hearing rumors last weekend that Dan Pompei was out at the Chicago Tribune.
It wasn’t until this morning that I got confirmation on Dan Pompei being gone, and that this was Dan Pompei leaving the Trib, it was his decision. Not the paper deciding to get rid of him. Dan Pompei is as an accomplished NFL writer as you will ever find. So this is a huge void for the Trib to fill as his leaving coincides with the start of football season.
No word yet on what he's doing next or who his replacement will be...
Comcast SportsNet, the local television station owned by the Chicago Blackhawks
, White Sox
has signed veteran Illinois
high school football sports writer/recruiting authority Edgy Tim, also known as Tim O’Halloran, to be its local preps football expert effective August 1.
Edgy Tim (@EDGYTIM) is often featured on Rivals, which is owned by Yahoo. Even people like me, who despise National Signing Day, hate recruiting, can’t stand preps coverage, unfollow people who constantly tweet out high school sports and recruiting news, still recognize the talent and ability of Edgy Tim. He's at the very top of his specific game; no question...
Happy NBA Draft Day! For all you Chicago Bulls
fans, get ready to see what the team does with the #20 and #49 picks in 2013 Draft. Here’s a NBA
mock draft composite for your favorite team. You know what "The GarPax"
always likes to do. GarPax is a combination of GM Gar Forman and VP John Paxson.
When the Chicago Bulls
approach the draft, it's all about taking a player from a big name school who has a lot of experience.
Look for the Bulls to stay in character this draft and take yet another junior or senior from a high major program. Can you believe it's been five years already since the lottery gods smiled upon the Bulls and gave them the #1 pick, despite a 1.4% chance, and brought home Derrick Rose?
With D Rose returning, and a couple good moves this summer
, the Bulls could be right back at the top of the Eastern Conference heap next season.
And here’s our latest 2013 NBA Mock Draft.
The most ACCURATE on the whole wide web the last two years!!! David Kay was #1;
Chicago alternative radio station Q101 made a rape joke during game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Chicago Blackhawks
and Boston Bruins. Now for $1,000 guess the medium in which Q101 made this horrible insensitive gaffe...
Tell Q101 what they’ve just won: lots of listeners lost, a deeply offended audience, corporate sponsors aghast (they might bail too possibly), a public relations nightmare, an inevitable upcoming public apology, and maybe even a fired social media
Didn’t we learn from the film Borat
that rape jokes aren’t ok? Well, it has been 8 years since that movie came out. Didn’t WE JUST LEARN, in this exact NHL
postseason, that tweeting sexual assault jokes during hockey
games isn't cool?
The LA Kings Twitter
account just made that mistake a few weeks ago when they let a local shock jock sports talk radio guy
take over their Twitter
feed for a period of a Stanley Cup Playoff game...
