Media Notebook 2-16-13: Kate Upton SI Swimsuit, Danica Patrick Revelation, Reeva Steenkamp

-The Danica Patrick Ricky Stenhouse Jr. relationship that went public a few weeks ago was the talk of NASCAR media day. And it yielded some good sound bites, even a Shakespearean reference. And we also might have confirmed the rumors we’ve heard about the real reason for her divorce. Read the paragraph below in between the lines.

From Memphis Commercial Appeal:

The two spent the last two seasons racing in the Nationwide Series, and Patrick leaned on Stenhouse, the two-time Nationwide champion, for friendship and advice after her move to NASCAR. She said the relationship grew deeper, and they went public after she filed for divorce in early January from her husband, Paul Hospenthal. She and Hospenthal announced in November they were splitting up after seven years of marriage.

See what it implies? We can draw a straight line; we can infer what really happened.

-Speaking of extremely gorgeous and recently divorced famous female athletes, Lindsey Vonn destroyed her ACL and MCL in a crash recently and she Instagrammed (see, we need to start saying “Instagrammed” like we say “Tweeted”) pics of her now damaged but usually absolutely perfect legs

-The week truly belonged to Kate Upton. Or more specifically the Kate Upton SI Swimsuit spreads. Gawker head the best headline about it. Maybe the best headline ever: Kate Upton Almost died in Antarctica so that Millions of People could Masturbate to her. Even better than Gawker’s response to the 2012 Kate Upton SI swimsuit cover, an extended profile of Kate Upton’s boobs.

(Slate) Here’s how SI defended freezing and frostbiting their superstar meal ticket

But there’s more Kate Upton controversy this week, when you’re that much of a star, there’s always lovers and haters. Upton claimed she’s single on a Fox Detroit appearance on Valentine’s Day. Not dating Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander. Big League Stew has three theories behind why she did that.

-And then there all the haters calling Upton fat, and saying that she looks pregnant in her body paint pictures. Strongly disagree on both counts. SI can thank Upton and all the controversy for helping to keep their print edition still breathing.

-The Oscar Pistorius shooting and killing of model Reeva Steenkamp takes another tragic and chilling turn. The more we learn, the more haunting and pre-meditated it seems. After he allegedly shot her numerous times, he took her to the basement and tried to revive her.

-(MSN News) South Africa’s national broadcaster says it will screen a reality TV show featuring the dead model girlfriend of Oscar Pistorius, two days after she was shot and killed at the home of the double-amputee athlete.

In a statement Saturday, SABC confirms it will air the “Tropika Island of Treasure” program “which features the late Reeva Steenkamp.”

The family of Reeva Steenkamp wishes for the show to go on.

-Charissa Thompson is dating Chicago Bulls bust and current ESPN analyst Jay Williams, The Big Lead reports.

I met Charissa Thompson once, at the 2010 Big Ten Tournament media party. She was really nice (seemingly to a phony level, most sideline princesses are over-the-top nice when you meet them in person and it doesn’t often seem very genuine) and I asked her to do an interview for my website, she agreed. And then passed me on to some douchebag publicist/agent who totally blew me off. The interview never happened (really could have used those extra page views)

-Dale Earnhardt Jr. by far the most popular driver in NASCAR is launching his own online radio programming Dirty Mo Radio
Notre Dame junior defenseman Jared Beers has been suspended from the team indefinitely due to an off-campus incident that occurred on Sunday, Feb. 3.

According to the South Bend Tribune, the 22-year-old Beers was booked in the St. Joseph County Jail early Monday on suspicion of battery, trespass, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Allegedly, the female manager of Brothers Bar and Grill told Beers to leave the bar after he tried to take beer from other patrons. Beers reportedly refused to leave, punched the manager in the face and then stepped on her head, face and neck when she fell to the ground and also pulled her ponytail.

Pretty funny that his name is Beers isn’t it? I guess he just joins the recent tradition of Fighting Irish drunken criminal activity: Michael Floyd, Tommy Rees, Carlo Calabrese, DaVaris Daniels

Well, I guess Beers won’t be there when ND plays in the Hockey City Classic, the Fighting Irish players will be sporting special jerseys from an era when Notre Dame hockey played all its games outdoors–the club era from 1963 to 1968.
