The games of the XXII Winter Olympiad commence in Sochi today. From the Opening to the Closing Ceremonies, there are plenty of opportunities to watch the Olympics and meet Olympians in Chicago. Here is a short list of events.
The Old Town Pour House will kick off the opening ceremonies with event that will give you a chance to come watch and celebrate as local olympians watch the opening ceremonies.
The OTPH will have specials for the entire Olympic Fortnight. According to their website "Celebrate our Winter Olympic athletes with a beer flight inspired by the games. Enjoy (5) 6oz. tasters of the selections below."
Winter Games Flight: Dales Pale Ale, Allagash Black, Lindeman's Framboise, Dortmunder Gold, Chainbreaker White IPA 18.00
Their Oakbrook location will also have a different Winter Games Flight: Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold, Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Greenbush Anger Black IPA, Goose Island Green Line, Dark Horse Raspberry Ale.
Crew will also be hosting an opening ceremonies viewing party. They bill it as their Olympic Games Opening Ceremony watch party at Crew, 4804 N. Broadway Chicago. LGBT friendly bar that is a designated Pride House, will be donating portion of proceeds to Russian Freedom Fund to aid Russian LGBT athletes and others. They will be showing ceremonies with sound turned ON. No cover, there will be drink and food specials....come on out if you don't have other plans!"
Shani Davis was born in Hyde Park, grew up in Rogers Park and became a great speed skater at the Evanston Speed Skating Club at the Robert Crown Center in Evanston. He will be attempting to win his third consecutive Gold Medal in the 1000 meters on Wednsday February 12. With that accomplishment, Davis will become the first American Male to win Gold in three consecutive Winter Olympics.

According to NBC5, "The viewing will also signify the launching of the organization Chicago ICE (Inner City Excellence), an ice skating program started by Davis' former coach, three-time Olympian and New Trier Alum Nathaniel Mills.
Brian Hansen Olympic Viewing Party February 12
Watch speed skater Brian Hansen race for a medal in Sochi. Join skaters at the Northbrook Sports Center, where he trained, starting at 7pm.
Jason Brown Day at the Centennial Ice Area in Highland Park. The Highland Park Park District will be hosting a viewing party to watch figure skater and HP native Jason Brown. Here is the information from their website.
"The Park District of Highland Park will be hosting a Community Viewing party at Centennial Ice Arena (3100 Trail Way) on Friday, February 14 from 9am-1pm to watch Jason skate in Sochi! Watch the performance on the big screen while you enjoy free open skate or cheer him on from the bleachers! Refreshments will be provided by our friends at Sunset Foods."
The United States Olympic Committee is sponsoring a Road to Sochi tour leading up to and through the Olympics. The Chicago stop is February 19th and 20th from 12-6 at Pioneer Court, in NBC Plaza right next to Tribune tower.
Former Olympians schedule to attend include legendary former women's hockey player and Downers Grove native Cammi Granato, former bobsledder Vonetta Flowers, former speed skater Derek Parra, former short track speed skater and Champaign native Katherine Reutter, and sled hockey player Rico Roman
