Northwestern lets potential win over Nebraska slip away

Northwestern lets potential win over Nebraska slip away
The last time Nebraska visited Northwestern (1931) Al Capone was in attendance at Ryan Field. In fact, his presence was announced over the PA and he arrived at the game with a VIP style motorcade. He witnessed a 31-7 NU victory. Which NU? Northwestern. This game was a lot closer as a 53 yard field... Read more »

Northwestern sets school record for total offense

Northwestern sets school record for total offense
In their 44-29 victory over Indiana Saturday, Northwestern had an extremely balanced attack on offense: accruing 310 yards passing and 394 yards rushing (704 overall on 93 plays). The first and only 700 yard total offense day in school history just says so much about how a very bad Hoosier defense was just so over-matched... Read more »

Northwestern: Chicago's 5-0 B1G team

Northwestern: Chicago's 5-0 B1G team
Entering this college football Saturday 4-0, Northwestern was just outside the national rankings. If that seemed perplexing, consider the unimpressive record of NU’s four vanquished opponents. After today however, with a 44-29 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers bringing NU to 5-0, the Wildcats should be well within the national rankings, and deservedly so. Not that... Read more »

Northwestern wins 2nd half, battle vs. Vanderbilt

Northwestern wins 2nd half, battle vs. Vanderbilt
Northwestern QB Kain Colter, usually a dual threat, was very inconsistent tonight. He finished 7 of 14 passing for 44 yards, with 66 yards rushing in the Northwestern Wildcats 23-13 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores. But he made a big play when it counted; running for a 29 yard touchdown to ice the game. Vanderbilt... Read more »

Northwestern football: 2012 comprehensive season preview

Northwestern football: 2012 comprehensive season preview
What a difference a year makes for Northwestern QB Kain Colter. Last season the backup QB to Dan Persa found himself making the stat sheet as a triple threat. You had to look in three areas of the box score: rushing, passing and receiving, to see the entire scope of his impact on the game. This year, the starting signal caller job is all Colter’s and his main weapon will be Kyle Prater (if the NCAA waiver goes through). A lot of things have to go right in Evanston, but if they do, NU will have one of the best pitch and catch combos in the Big Ten, and the Wildcats offense could make some noise this college football season. On defense, well……...

Northwestern spring football game recap, nuggets and tidbits

Northwestern spring football game recap, nuggets and tidbits
Spring college football is always interesting for it’s unique scoring system. It’s an intra-squad game and every school does it different. Some schools divide into two teams, others, like today’s Northwestern spring game, go offense vs. defense. And therefore, Ryan Field in Evanston today featured a “pick-17″ (instead of a “pick-6″) with the points system... Read more »

Northwestern Shocks Top 10 Nebraska on The Road 28-25

Northwestern Shocks Top 10 Nebraska on The Road 28-25
For this one, I turn to my Northwestern beat reporter at TSB- Jamie Arkin Physical and low scoring – it was the complete opposite of the game everyone expected to see. Northwestern and Nebraska have high-powered offenses, and Northwestern has constantly underperformed on defense. But, to the disbelief of most, Northwestern outplayed the physical Cornhuskers,... QB Kain Colter Leads Northwestern's Formidable Ground Attack

QB Kain Colter Leads Northwestern's Formidable Ground Attack
In one of the best displays by the offensive line in ages, the Northwestern Wildcats gained 320 rushing yards versus Eastern Illinois, the first time they have topped the 300-yard mark since 2005—on 67 attempts, the most rushes in a game for NU since 2003 and 10 shy of the school record. This gives them... Read more »

Northwestern Plays Entertaining Bowl Game in Historic Cotton Bowl Stadium

Bowl games in the Pat Fitzgerald era have been like my experiences with women who sport “tramp stamps.” Fun and exciting, but ultimately the outcome is rather negative. Three years, three games where the Wildcats entered as underdogs by more than a touchdown. And three losses by a narrow margin. They were just one possession,... Read more »
