fans complained A LOT about the officiating of the center match-up between UNC big man Sean May and Illinois post James Augustine in the 2005 national title game, but a critical call going against their favor with 40 seconds left tonight was probably much worse. In a one possession game with under a minute left, Miami was awarded an out of bounds call. However, the replay clearly showed it should have been Illini
basketball. But the NCAA doesn’t review out of bounds calls.
Even a Miami player admitted it, after his team advanced, beating Illinois 63-59.
fans were LIVID about this on Twitter, and even Miami fans were tweeting that Illinois got jobbed on the call. It turned the tide in crunch time. It was a simple black-or-white missed call at a crucial moment, while the ’05 title game had a series of questionable calls that favored Carolina and went against Illinois. These calls started in the early minutes. Augustine fouled out of that game after just nine minutes played while May looked like Shaquille O’Neal for a night (slightly aided by the referees, some in Illini
Nation might say) May and Augustine were both college star; both were drafted but neither amounted to anything in the NBA...
At 22-11, 8-10 in conference Illinois basketball has a real #10 or #11 seed in NCAA Tournament resume right now. Beating Minnesota 51-49 today on a Brandon Paul buzzer beater in the Big Ten Tournament
truly helps as the Gophers have an RPI of 24 and the nation's second highest strength of schedule. The Illini were likely in, even if they had lost. But the W means they don't have to sweat now at all on Selection Sunday.
Oh and you can watch video of said buzzer beater at the end of this post.
All bracketologies (projection of the NCAA Tournament field) will have the Illini in, if they didn't already.
WHAT WORKS: RPI 43, SOS 9 They have four big signature wins over #1 Indiana Hoosiers
Bulldogs #10 Ohio State Buckeyes
#14 Butler Bulldogs (neutral court). UI is the only team to win at the Kennel, and Butler is the only team other than the Illini to have wins over both the #1 and #3 teams in the country. Also two wins over Minnesota greatly enhances the resume...
The Illinois Fighting Illini
suffered their first loss last night to Mizzou, but they’re still 12-1. And nationally ranked. I think any Illinois fan would have taken 12-1 at this point when the season started. This Illini
team will go as far as their seniors will take them. And I’m not talking about Tyler Griffey. Four year starter guards D.J. Richardson
and Brandon Paul
are the keys to the Illini
maintaining that top ranking and getting a high seed in March. And then doing something with it...
Before we get to the breakdown of what happened in the Illinois Fighting Illini
first loss, (Illinois was one of the last 6 unbeaten teams remaining in the nation) suffered at the hands of the Missouri Tigers 82-73, a few observations and notes on this series and rivalry overall, with updated stats.
-Why is this even called the Braggin’ Rights
game? I mean seriously, how many of you Illini
people actually have Mizzou
people to tell how much they suck? (after Illinois wins of course)
-Why does this arena have a NBA
three-point line on the floor? There hasn’t been a NBA
team in St. Louis since 1965? (And why were Brandon Paul
and company bombing away from that spot so much...
The state of Illinois football has long been declared a disaster area. FEMA will be sending aid soon to clean up the wreckage created my Superstorm Tim Beckman. Actually, the true creator of this mess is Athletic Director Mike Thomas, but that’s another column for another time. Clearly, Beckman is in way over his head,... Read more »
Tim Beckman isn’t the only reason the Illinois Fighting Illini are completely atrocious this season. Sure, he’s the main reason; as he’s clearly over-matched every week and in over his head. However, the main driving force behind the Illini being awful is the complete ineptitude of the offensive line. More than halfway through the season,... Read more »
The Illinois Fighting Illini are 2-3, but those two wins came courtesy of a MAC and FCS team. They’ve been absolutely destroyed by every FBS team they’ve faced this season, even getting routed at home by a non power conference team in Louisiana Tech. In their three losses, the Illini have surrendered an average of... Read more »
One thing is for sure- this Illinois Fighting Illini team can play some defense. With starting quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase injured, safety Ashante Williams returned an interception 60 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown to help Illinois and new coach Tim Beckman hang on for a 24-7 win Saturday over Western Michigan in the season opener for... “ILLINOIS. OUR STATE. OUR TEAM.” will be displayed within advertising and marketing campaigns around the state.
will probably no longer be taking shots at Northwestern
and their “Chicago’s Big Ten
Team” slogan. Hopefully, that nonsense is over with the new Illinois re-brand...
started to get defensive
, real defensive in the 2010 Texas Bowl. In that 38-14 trouncing of Robert Griffin III
and Baylor, they held RG3 and the Bears
The man who would win the Heisman trophy and become the #2 overall pick in the NFL Draft
the very next season was out of rhythm, out of sync versus the Illini
in Houston. And that D carried over into 2011, when they Illini
had a top 10 national defense.
A lot of that was the personnel, a lot of it was coordinator Vic Koenning, who unfortunately had to move on when Ron Zook
was replaced by Tim Beckman.
Can they keep it going this fall, despite the coaching changes...
