Doing a power rankings is fun and interesting in the beginning and/or middle of the season. Towards the end, it’s kind of useless. You just look at the standings. Also, preconference basketball doesn’t really mean as much as conference action. That’s when we’ll learn a lot more. Now that Butler has knocked off the #1 Hoosiers
, you know they’ll lose their spot at #1 here as well.
Guess who the new #1 is...
Last night I was lucky enough to be at a small private reception that included Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany. Yes, I was at the same party as the most powerful man in the prestigious college basketball and college football league. Delaney’s a University of North Carolina alum, and this was a Chicago Carolina Club... Read more »

When doing a Big Ten Power rankings this time of year, there’s three tiers. You have your top three teams, a force to be reckoned with in national college basketball. Then you have this muddled mix of mediocre blah. Some of it will rise to the cream, and possibly make a run in March because... Read more »
Lots of shakeup this week in my Big Ten Power Rankings. Let’s see where everyone shakes up. “CAN’T WAIT” as the New York Jets Bart Scott would say: 1. Ohio State Buckeyes (22-0, 9-0) Following their narrowest of escapes against a much less talented Northwestern team on Saturday night; it’s pretty obvious they’re not going... Read more »
Tuesday night’s game between top-ranked Ohio State and No. 12 Purdue – freshman phenom Jared Sullinger vs. the Moore/Johnson combo – had the makings for a classic Big Ten battle. Instead, it was a one-sided affair in favor of the Buckeyes as they embarrassed the Boilermakers 87-64. It was the first time this season that... Read more »
Ohio State takes over the #1 position in both national college basketball polls. Just like they did in college football a couple months ago…then they lost their very next game at Wisconsin. In hoops, they don’t visit Madison until February 12th, so maybe they’ll be alright for awhile this time. After the Buckeyes, the talent... Read more »
Despite the presence of two nationally ranked teams, exciting and entertaining college basketball this was not. The game being played in this Big Ten basketball contest was like the slush, snow, ice and stagnant dirty water outside the Kohl Center- slow, hard to navigate, sludge and drudgery. For the Illini at least, there was never any...
