Illini Crush West Virginia 47-26 in Basketball Scrimmage at NATO Air Base

It is impressive that the Michigan State Spartans and North Carolina Tar Heels will take on each other in college basketball aboard the deck of an aircraft carrier. But don't sell the Illinois Fighting Illini and West Virginia Mountaineers short. The two basketball teams visited Aviano Air Base yesterday during their summer Italian tours. And it resulted in Illinois destroying West Virginia 47-26 in an exhibition scrimmage held in front of approximately 500 military personnel and their families. The 20-minute contest was part of a special opportunity that also saw the Illini and Mountaineers hold a youth clinic for children of the Airmen and had each team participate in a 10-minute scrimmage against the Aviano varsity unit. In those games, Illinois defeated Aviano 26-12, while West Virginia topped Aviano 25-7. The three squads also held a dunk contest for the crowd with Illini junior Joseph Bertrand claiming the victory...

Best Brian Kelly Quotes and Soundbites from Notre Dame Media Day

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been practicing for 10 days already, but the ND annual Media Day was held Tuesday, and Head Coach Brian Kelly, was in rare form. His opening included joke I will start by saying that they are ticketing out back. I am a big proponent in ‘quid pro quo,’ meaning... Read more »

Former Illini All-American Dee Brown: Bright Future in Coaching? (Video)

He's one of the most iconic players in recent college basketball history, and the face of Illini basketball for half a decade. Dee Brown, an All-American, and winner of the 2006 Cousy Award (given to the nation's best point guard) was the cover boy for SI's 2005 March Madness issue. During that Final Four run, his "poppin your collar" move became a national trend. He didn't invent; he just brought it back and made it huge. As accomplished a college basketball player as Brown was, his NBA career is a microscopic footnote as best. He did score 10 points once in a Utah Jazz 2007 playoff game alongside his Illinois running mate Deron Williams, but that was pretty much it. He's a fine overseas player, and he'll continue contributing in those leagues for awhile, but what coaching after it's all said and done...

All-Big 10, NU QB Dan Persa Completes Comeback Trail; (Video)

Persa enters this season after being named the All-Big Ten first-team quarterback in 2010, a season in which he broke the Big Ten's all-time record for completion percentage with a 73.5 mark. He missed the last three games due to a ruptured Achilles, but still had a 5 touchdowns, threw just four interceptions and ran for another nine scores. He is healthy and ready to go for training camp. Today was NU Media Day; and Persa spoke about a whole host of topics. Watch the video after the jump...

Jason Ford Needs to be Illini Football BMOC

When Rashard Mendenhall left the Illinois Fighting Illini with a year of eligibility left in 2007, for the NFL Draft, Illinois suffered the next year. Aside from that whole “planes cannot take down a building” tweets of idiocy and the sponsorship pullout that followed, things have gone pretty well for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Mendenhall....
