Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith Discredits Jim Tressel Rumors

Tis the season for rumors and innuendo! Hark the herald bloggers sing of what could be, might be but probably isn't.

Earlier today, according to Chicago Now's Daily Sports Tab

two sources that are very close to recruiting at prominent
universities confirmed that Jim Tressel will no longer be the head
football coach at Ohio State University after the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.

Despite Tressel's phenomenal record
in Columbus (well, his record vs. everyone not in the SEC anyway) this
story was believable considering that 1.) The number one public
relations rule for releasing "bad news," do it at times when most people
are likely to distracted by the weekend 2.) Big changes like this often occur at times of crisis (the "Shock Doctrine") and we all learned on Thursday about the Ohio State Buckeyes being rocked by harsh suspensions to their star players for 2011.

However, this college football bombshell, this sure to be a media sensation of a story has already been refuted.

Merry Xmas everyone!! Go back to drinking your eggnog!! Rumors not true.. First NBA game I watched this year!! http://yfrog.com/h28fpnzj

So for now, the rumors are inherently discredited. There could very well
be a spark of fire behind the smoke somewhere. But if anything were to
happen regarding this situation, it's not going to come out until after
the Sugar Bowl. So take anything you hear about Tressel leaving these
days with a grain of salt.

Actually, take that salt and help clear the roads with it. We need to get back from our holiday parties safely.

  • Hey TheSportsBank: I like the comment "So for now, the rumors are inherently discredited. There could very well be a spark of fire behind the smoke somewhere."

So much for discrediting the bogus story! Its like saying "we are wrong for irresponsible reporting BUT something could happen in the future that makes our make believe story somehow true."

You need to change your name to TheSportsBlank, as in incapable of common sense thinking.

  • In reply to StopTheBull:

hahahahaha. funny! You have no clue what you're talking about, but still LOL nonetheless

  • In reply to StopTheBull:

thesportsblank - as you point out, Tressel's record against the SEC is not good but I bet you didn't know that over the past 4 season's the SEC and Big Ten have split the 10 bowl games where the conferences met.

And since 2002 the Big Ten has a one game advantage in head-to-head bowl games.

And who can forget a few years ago when a very bad Michigan team beat Tebow's Florida Gators.

So yes, as you so blatantly point out, Tressel has had difficulty against the SEC but not the Big Ten as a conference.

  • In reply to StopTheBull:

sure. but let's see what happens this year. in the "Big 10/SEC Challenge" I like Tressel's chance vs. Ark. MSU vs. Alabama, not so much. Michigan vs. Miss St? could go either way, but I do think PSU will take UF...another 2-2

  • In reply to StopTheBull:

My point is that SEC fanboys and the media in general tend to portray the SEC as a dominant league and the Big 10 as weaker. However, when measured by facts and not opinion, the Big 10 holds up well against the SEC over the past decade. What happens in one year is not indicative of the longer term view.

But I do pretty much agree with you regarding this year. I think OSU and Ark is a toss up. Its all on Mallet. If he makes mistakes they lose. If he plays well they probably win. Bama will take MSU and Miss St. vs Mich - who knows (Mich defense is horrible so I will take Miss St.) and UF flat out stinks. PSU should win but its an emotional game for UF and Urban Meyers last game so I think UF squeaks this one out.

  • In reply to StopTheBull:

    Hey thesportsbank:
Dude, my predictions were spot on (per my previous posting), right up to the Razorbacks losing if Mallet makes mistakes. I won't say that his interception is what cost them the game but it certainly did contribute to the lose.

Tressel helped Ark as much as anybody in the second half by digging a hole and sticking his head in it. The defense (and some timely dropped passes) saved his ass. Ark looked like a team filled with Braylon Edwards'. :-))
