Multiple NFL and Chicago Bears sources are reporting through Twitter that the Chicago Bears and General Manager Phil Emery have hired Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman as their new head coach. Trestman will have beat out Indianapolis Colts' offensive coordinator and interim head coach Bruce Arians as well as Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell for the job.
Trestman has been out of the NFL for eight years but succeeded with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes by accumulating a 64-34 record over five years and winning back to back Grey Cups. Trestman is a proven quarterback developer and will no doubt play a vital role in helping Jay Cutler hone his skills. In his time in the NFL Trestman helped develop quarterbacks like Steve Young, Bernie Kosar, Jake Plummer and Rich Gannon (who won the 2002 MVP under Trestman).
Trestman brings an offensive mind, something the Bears had been desperately missing during the Lovie Smith era. It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, on the 2012 coaching staff remains on board with Trestman. Quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is not expected to be back and offensive coordinator Mike Tice probably won't be asked to stay around unless he takes a demotion. On the defensive side Rod Marinelli could still stick around as the defensive coordinator, it has been reported that keeping the same defensive staff intact was agreed upon between the Bears and all three head coaching finalists.
Former student under Trestman, Rich Gannon, raved about his former coach on the ESPN 1000 radio show Waddle & Silvy last week calling him the smartest football mind he has ever met. Trestman is not the sexy hire like Jon Gruden or Bruce Arians might have been but it is no doubt a changing of the guard when it comes to the approach on game day and definitely when it comes to offense. General Manager Phil Emery made the decision with Trestman after interviewing at least 13 candidates in the past two weeks and looks like he has found the "synergy" he preached in his press conference a couple of weeks back.
