Bears Cut Roster To 53, Add Okoye, Trade Clutts

The Bears began trimming their roster by cutting nine players including veteran quarterback Josh McCown.  Despite looking impressive in last night's preseason finale against the Browns (20/29 for 157 yards and 2 TD's) the Bears decided to release McCown instead of keeping him as the third string quarterback.  McCown was with the team in 2011 and added some stability at the quarterback position when Caleb Hanie struggled in the absence of Jay Cutler.  With McCown being cut the Bears are left with only two quarterbacks on their roster in Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell.  There is a possibility the Bears bring back rookie QB Matt Blanchard or search through the released players from other NFL teams and add depth there.

Other cuts by the Bears included running back Armando Allen, linebacker Jabara Williams, wide receiver Brittan Golden, safety Mark LeGree, and cornerbacks Isaiah Frey, Gerald McCoy, and Cornelius Brown.  Bears fullback Tyler Clutts was traded to the Houston Texans for cornerback Sherrick McManis.

The Bears are also close to adding defensive lineman Amobi Okoye to the team.  Okoye was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after missing three of the four preseason games due to injuries.  Okoye was with the Bears last season after spending his first three seasons with the Houston Texans.  Okoye was the 10th overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft and is expected to help the Bears' depth at defensive tackle.

The Bears, along with the rest of the 31 NFL teams, need to trim their roster to 53 men by the end of Friday so check back here for updates throughout the day.

UPDATE: The Bears narrowed their roster to the league limit of 53.  After making several cuts earlier in the day the Bears cut defensive end Chauncey Davis, linebacker Xavier Adibi, cornerback Jonathan Wilhite, wide receivers Rashied Davis, Joe Anderson, Terriun Crump, offensive tackles James Brown, Cory Brandon, A.J. Greene, guard Ricky Henry, defensive tackle Jordan Miller, tight end Brandon Venson, and defensive end Alston Whiteside.

Interestingly, the Bears final roster leaves them with four tight ends and zero fullbacks.  The Bears traded fullback Tyler Clutts to Houston earlier in the day and decided to keep Kellen Davis, Matt Spaeth, Evan Rodriguez and Kyle Adams all at the tight end position.  Expect one of them to fill in at fullback when needed.
