We're almost to Friday...Almost. Time for the Thursday Morning Tea Shot.
Cubs Fall to Rockies
The Cubs got out to a 3-0 lead by the fourth inning, but the Rockies came storming back including a six run sixth inning. They went on to win 13-4.
Baez Watch: 0-4. 1-10 so far through two games.
Also, an interesting bit of news broke overnight. The Cubs are reportedly the only team to put in a waiver claim for Phillies' pitcher Cole Hamels. The Cubs aren't in a position to be putting in a claim to "block" another team from claiming him, so obviously they like Hamels and think he could be a part of their future. As David Kaplan points out in the article above, he's got about $100 million left on his contract through the 2018 season with a team option for 2019. The Cubs will need pitching going forward after they traded away Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel on July 4th. Jon Lester is also a free agent...Imagine Lester, Hamels, Wood, and Arrieta being the top four in that rotation. Not bad. Not bad at all. Stay tuned on this one.
White Sox Lose Again
Chris Sale got no run support after giving up two early runs. He struck out nine over six innings. The Sox could only manage one run on eight hits. They'll try to avoid being swept by baseball's worst team today. They also could be without Adam Eaton for a couple days after the center fielder went crashing into the wall chasing after a fly ball.
Martellus Bennett Still Out
The Bears' starting tight end is still out of camp after being suspended indefinitely after his fight with Kyle Fuller on Monday. Head Coach Marc Trestman said he spoke with Bennett yesterday and that it was a very positive conversation. He didn't rule out Bennett playing in tomorrow night's preseason opener. I'd be surprised if Bennett plays against the Eagles, even if he's back at practice today.
PGA Championship Underway
Golf's final major, the PGA Championship is underway from Valhalla, and Tiger Woods IS playing. Woods just missed a birdie putt on 10 (his first hole) and made bogey on the par 3 11th. I said wrote yesterday on Facebook that I thought that if Tiger played, he'd be nowhere near contention. Don't get me wrong, I hope he plays well and I hope he's in contention on Sunday. I just don't see it happening.
Greg Oden Arrested
The former number one overall NBA Draft pick was arrested near Indianapolis after allegedly punching a woman thought to be his girlfriend. He was reportedly apologetic for what happened, saying "I was wrong, and I know what has to happen". Oden's career has been anything but good, quite frankly. Sad to see a guy with a lot of potential not be able to make the most of his opportunities.
