Going for gold

Competing against the best is what we’ve seen on TV for the past week. People who train day in and day out is what the Olympics show cases. Today beside the coverage of the international games, you can watch some other going to gold, at the USA National 7s Tournament that will be streaming live on the USA Rugby Ustream Page. Thirty-two teams from across the nation will compete today to take home the title of best 7s team in the nation.  Without a doubt a few of the people playing this weekend will be playing in the 2016 Olympics in Rio.  The sports re-entry into the Olympic has definitely fueled a strong 7s season across the nation with more teams participating in the summer tournaments than ever before.

There are also upcoming opportunities to help the youth develop their skills as iYRA is launching more programs in schools to get children engaged in the sport with help from World Sports Chicago. The Illinois Tornados won the Cody Cup this year in the annual match against the Wisconsin Youth Select
Side. The team left last Wednesday for it’s own international games. The Tornadoes are on a seventeen day rugby tour of England, Wales and Scotland to
play six rugby games. They are being coached by Nolan Day and Lou Raymond and will have the opportunity to play against more experienced teams and also a chance to stay with host families and really experience the culture and sights not as just another tourist. iYRA will also have their annual summer  meeting on August 19th and in September will be holding a coaching certification clinic.

With the fall season quickly coming, the Wapiti will begin their monthly clinics at Revere Park with the first one being Sunday August 12th, hosted by the Chicago Griffins, Chicago’s Super League team. Marquette Park will also be hosting a weekly rugby session in the fall as an after school program initiative. That also means for many people it’s just about time to renew your USA Rugby CIPP/Membership so you will be covered to play in clubs this year.
