So I have been busy and crazy as I am sure many of you have been as well. But I do apologize for not having posted in about 10 days with so much going on in the Chicago Rugby Area. We have had Select Side Games, Malcolm May went to England with the USA U-19 Team and for the USA 7s team Sean Mahon from the Glen Ellyn Ducks went to England also. The Griffins started out the season with a big win and have had two tough losses making this weekend’s home game a big one. We have some of the best rugby players in the world coming to town this weekend to host a clinic, and it's already time to start thinking about Sevens Season!
I would like to congratulate CARFU U23 Women's Select-Side. The ladies played last weekend with only one try scored on them the entire weekend. The played against Ohio, Indiana and the Illinois Select Side winning Tier 2. The scored from last weekend were 83-0 v Indiana , 24-5 v Ohio and in the Final v Illinois
Tomorrow at Garfield Park, international rugby great Waisale Serevi will be hosting a camp for rugby and a coaching clinic. I am excited to hear and see how this camp goes. His camp in Las Vegas had great reviews and I am sure it will have an awesome impact on the athletes that will be at the one in Chicago. They will be focusing primarily on player development and core skills and are promising that you'll see a huge difference from the two days of this camp.
Chicago's Super League team the Griffins will be playing in town this weekend at Riis Park and will host the Denver Barbarians, who they beat earlier in the season. The Griffins have had some old players come back this season and like every other team has had new players come in helping build the team. With a roster of over 50 guys, half super league and half CARFU league, they are well practiced and hopefully will pull out a win before heading to the West Coast for next week's game.
As for Summer Sevens... it seem like months to go but it will come quickly! For the women, Midwest has not had a sevens select side in a few years and will hopefully be able to get a team together this year. After North Shore's Nationals win, Midwest is hoping
to get ladies out there and show what make the Midwest the best. Both Chicago Women and North Shore have had 7s teams in the past summer. If you are looking for a fun way to keep fit and do some small day travels this summer, you might want to plan not as it is right around the corner. Most of the games are pretty annual and always a blast, the Chicago Blaze host June 23 Firehouse 7s, June 30. Lake Front 7s in Milwaukee is always the same weekend as Summer Fest and you can usually hear the bands across the lake. Summer Fest is a great time and makes Milwaukee worth the trip. July 14 Rock n' Roll 7s in Cleveland and July 21 Rock Hard 7s in Grand Rapids. Sevens is a really great fast paced and fun game and with that being the game that is going to the Olympics, it should draw more people to be looking to play. Also with the smaller teams you really do get a chance to know more players as the same teams go to pretty much every
Hope you all have a great weekend, get out and enjoy some rugby and hopefully I'll see some of you at the Serevi Clinic!
