Spring is here, and rugby is everywhere!

The spring season is here and with beautiful weather why wouldn't you want to get out and check out a game or two? Whiskey 10s had perfect weather as teams across the Chicagoland area and the state got to shake off the winter. Last weekend the Chicago Griffin's Super League team beat the Denver Barbarians 45-35 playing in Denver. USA Rugby High School All Americans has selected Sean Mahon (one of twelve teens on the team) from the Glen Ellyn Ducks to play next weekend in the Rosslyn Park Sevens. Rugby is also quickly expanding into middle school phys. ed classes as well as in other community youth programs.

Spring, as I mentioned before is a great time to get experience and knowledge of the game with a variety of tournaments that take place, like Whiskey 10s, Nash Bash, Three Wise Ruggers, and SIU-C's All Fools. There is also a unique opportunity coming up for players and coaches to improve and learn some new tips in the game of Sevens and XVs. Serevi is bringing a two day camp to Chicago in partnership with Loyola's Rugby Alumni Board.. The camp is for both male and female rugby athletes ages 14 and up. The camp is coached by The Serevi team of American, Australian, South African and Fijian coaches.

So why is this camp worth going to? Waisale Serevi is known the world round as The King of 7s. He had a rugby career that lasted over two decades and is one of the few players that plays both XVs and 7s rugby. Serevi-led teams have won three straight Melrose Cups in the early 1990s and he also Fiji to two Rugby Sevens World Cup Championships in 1997 and 2005.

As someone who is looking to expand their coaching knowledge I will definitely be checking out this clinic, not only because it's free for coaches, but it'll be a chance to get to hear some of the great players of the game tell you their tips. It's a bit expensive for the average teen and college student, but if you are club side it shouldn't be missed. As for teen and college team, it's definitely worth sending your top players to bring back new skills and knowledge to the game. This camp cannot be missed, even if your club can really only afford to send one player!

If you are looking for more information on the camp check out the Serevi team's site.

You can also check out ALL of the Griffin's game this season including their awesome win over Denver on the new Super League video site! This weekend you can check out Chicago's Super League team as they are playing at home, it's also many team's home openers including Lincoln Park and the Blaze!
