The History of Mokena
A Journey Through Time 1831 - 2010
After years of research author, Christine M. Brooks, compiled enough information from various sources, to create a timeline formatted book that documents close to every year of Mokena's history from 1831 - 2010. With the help of local historians, Matthew Galik, Robert Horras, and Richard Quinn, the group spent 3 years checking, comparing and confirming various sources in order to make this history of Mokena the most accurate to date.
The 89-page book is sectioned into an easy-to-read timeline including pictures, an outline of Mokena's progress highlighting its development and population growth, an extensively cited
version of the timeline showing newspaper clips, numerous books, legal documents, and interviews, and the Bibliography. This handy book is a must for anyone interested in how local history is effected by world history, since other important historical events are also noted.
Christine has been involved in preserving history since 1984, when she became involved with the I & M Canal National Heritage Corridor. For 16 years she was a part of the first-person interpretive group, The Canallers, where she portrayed Mary Ann Hubbard, wife of one of Chicago's founding fathers, Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard. Christine also worked as an historical interpreter at the Gaylord Building in Lockport and led historical cemetery walks while on staff for the Oak Lawn Park District. She was the museum curator at the Worth Historical Museum for 12 years. During those 12 years she secured a grant which enabled the museum to increase from a small room in a park district to 3 times its original size. While on staff as curator, she had also coordinated a Civil War Weekend for 5 years, which welcomed more than 5000 spectators each year to the village of Worth. In 2009, through the State of Illinois, she was named Illinoisan of the Year for her work in history. She is currently a member of the Mokena Area Historical Society and past member of the Worth Historical Society.
