When Sasha and I heard that one of our favorite hosts Jeremy (host of some of our favorite trivia nights and occasional guest blogger), was starting up a new trivia night in the Loop, we could not wait to check it out. Trivia nights that we can walk to after work are rare, and trivia at Tilted Kilt starts at 6pm, so we didn't even have to wait very long for it to start. It was great!
If you've never been to Tilted Kilt before, it is basically Hooters with
a Scottish theme. So, instead of waitresses wearing low-cut shirts and
really short shorts, they wear low cut shirts, plaid bras, and really
short kilts. I was a little uncomfortable when I first walked in,
because I assumed that the bar would be full of smarmy businessmen
ogling the waitresses, but the crowd was more diverse than we thought
(although there were clearly way more men than women in the
restaurant.) The waitstaff's skimpy outfits also initially made
us feel really awkward. Our waitress was actually really sweet, we
wanted to put a sweater on her and ask her to join us for trivia. The
food was just ok, and we noticed that there aren't a lot of options for
vegetarians, so be ready.
Depending on who you are, the atmosphere may not be ideal, but the
prizes are awesome. First place gets $250 cash and second place gets
$100 cash. That's right, cash. Not a bar gift certificate, or worse, a
bar gift certificate that you can't even use that night. Cash money.
We wish every trivia night would give away cash. Third place wins
Tilted Kilt merch.
Jeremy runs a great trivia night, and pub quiz at Tilted Kilt is no
exception. This time he had 6 rounds: general trivia, fashion, trivia
about the baseball postseason, a picture round where you had to identify
which city made famous a certain food (i.e., if the picture was of a
cheesesteak, the answer would be Philadelphia), and a round where he
named four songs and we had to name the album on which they appeared.
The final round was a speed round, where we had to name as many cities
where the Real World was filmed, in a couple minutes. What's
really impressive about Jeremy as a host is that he just knows a LOT of
trivia off hand. He had planned on doing another trivia round, but
since it was the first day of the NLDS, he just thought up 10 questions
about the baseball postseason and called it a round.
But our favorite quality about Jeremy as a trivia host is not how smart he is, it's his integrity. Cheating was rampant
at Tilted Kilt, and Jeremy disqualified at least three teams that he
caught using phones to look up answers. Trivia hosts always warn
against cheating, but we don't think we've actually seen a host do
anything about it. Maybe that many teams always cheat and we get
screwed out of a lot of wins, or maybe lots of people at Tilted Kilt
just have never played trivia before and didn't know the rules, but it
was nice to see the cheaters get called out.
It's also nice to see Jeremy doing more trivia nights these days. In
addition to Tilted Kilt, he does a great Sunday trivia at Firkin &
Pheasant, and Tuesdays at Ranalli's (but maybe not for long, because we
think he might have just picked up another bar--but don't worry, he's hiring a replacement).
Because of all the cheating DQs, Sasha and I made an
impressive-for-two-people third place, winning two Tilted Kilt girly
tees. If we knew anything about baseball, we would have gotten cash! Darn Kirk Gibson!
We definitely recommend Tilted Kilt. Parking can be difficult, but it's
really convenient if you are already in the Loop for work.
