Two events that I wanted to point out this month are the "Moms on a Mission" lunch at The Academy for Global Citizenship and the Beyond Solar fundraiser. You can view the "Moms on a Mission" invite here - AGC MOM INVITE.pdf. I organized these lunches in an effort to get more Moms, like me, to see first-hand the differences we can make in our schools to help the environment and the planet we are leaving behind for future generations.

The Academy for Global Citizenship teaches their students how to be stewards of the environment while also reinforcing and creating healthy habits & behavior changes that will last a lifetime. The children are educated each day in the most positive environment where there is an emphasis on health, wellness, care for our planet and kindness to all living things around us. You can learn all about the AGC at www.AGCChicago.org

The lunches are being held at the AGC on February 16th and March 9th. If you have any questions or are interested in attending a Moms on a Mission lunch, please email me allison (at) ecominders dot com. It is impossible to visit the AGC and not be touched or changed by the experience!

The other event that I wanted to focus on this month is the Beyond Solar fundraiser at Old Town Social on February 24th. Beyond Solar is holding this fundraiser to raise money for their next project, which is to bring solar power to impoverished areas of South Africa. This is their second project, as they found much success in their first one, which was bringing solar power to three villages in Koraput, India (read more here).
Beyond Solar's mission is "to improve the educational, medical, and economic well being of individuals and communities in the developing world by providing solar powered electricity." They accomplish this via a hybrid system which blends the traditional donation concept with micro-finance model. Beyond Solar essentially gives the people a loan to purchase the solar lamps which they are able to pay off over time. This creates a sense of responsibility along with pride of ownership, while also allowing the villagers access to capital for future development projects once their loans are paid off.
Beyond Solar is bringing safer, more economical electricity to these villages which then allows for these people to lead better and more fiscally positive lives. You can read more about Beyond Solar's successful model here, where you can see how much it makes sense from an environmental, financial and safety perspective.  I also included a slideshow below from Beyond Solar's first project in India.
Beyond Solar Goes to Africa! fundraiser is being held at Old Town Social on February 24th. To learn more about the event click here. You can also donate to Beyond Solar on their website
