August Green Scene Calendar

Even though the months of summer are very quickly (and very sadly) passing on us, there is definitely no shortage of great eco-focused events in August. From important fundraisers to the widely attended Veggie Fest in Naperville, there are some wonderful ways to spend your time giving to a good cause while learning how to lighten your impact on the planet! Here is your August Green Scene Calendar.pdf.

A notable event this month on Wednesday, August 4th is the fundraiser at Goose Island Brewery for the Illinois Environmental Council's Young Professionals Board. The goal of this event is to raise money for environmental advocacy by the IEC for the 2011 legislative session.

"For over 25 years, the Illinois Environmental Council (IEC) has served as the environmental community's eyes, ears and voice in Springfield.  From clean air to open spaces, the IEC works to ensure that our state's policies guarantee a sound environmental future for Illinois families.  When interests align to fight for tax breaks for new coal plants or oil refineries, or push to have tire-burning classified as renewable energy, the IEC steps in to fight on all our behalf to ensure that the environment has a seat at the table and a voice in the debate."

The IEC's Young Professionals board strives to motivate and organize a younger generation to stand up for the issues that are going to dramatically shape their future and that of their children's. Unless we fight for these issues and demand safer, better and more eco-friendly laws to protect our resources we are then allowing big corporations, big money and politicians to have free reign on our planet, our resources and our health. The IEC helps fight for these things, and help put in place and support politicians that will get these things done.
It is high time that safe products and healthier foods are available to everyone, not just those that can afford it. There should be laws in place that prohibit companies from putting toxic chemicals in our cleaning products, personal care products & foods and an organization like the IEC is trying to make this happen. Come out and help support the IEC this coming Wednesday at their fundraiser and get involved with their Young Professionals Board!
