This is NOT a Garden Water Feature, Chicago

This is NOT a Garden Water Feature, Chicago

This past weekend I made a quick stop at the apartment of a friend of a friend and spotted this water feature in the building's courtyard. I'm not going to diss the attempt at landscaping that can be seen at the edges of the photograph. I am, however, going to diss what has become of what was once maybe the courtyard's pond. Adding a water feature to your garden is an excellent way to bring in wildlife that would be looking for a drink during the heat of summer.  The sound of running water can also help mask the various noises around you and make your garden feel a bit more tranquil. A water feature, like this one, that is no longer working is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. That color green in water should only be seen during St Patrick's Day.  This is not a water feature, this is a menace to public health. You can report standing water/West Nile indicators to 311.

  • Hmmm, maybe it looks more like pea soup than lime Jello, but it still doesn't look like water.

Whatever it is, it looks like a science experiment gone awry. At first I thought maybe it was dyed green for St. Patrick's Day, then I realized we've had a lot of heavy rain that would've washed that out a long time ago. I feel sorry for the people who live in that apartment complex and have to deal with the mosquitoes breeding in there.

  • Wow. That's disgusting, and as you say, a menace to health.

  • In reply to ssgardengirl:

Right? I wonder what the residents of this complex think about the fountain.

  • It is really gross...on many levels. It also looks like it could be a cake mold for one of those cakewreck cakes...LOL. Sorry, I'm bad.

  • In reply to gardenmom29:

You're brilliant! The next cake I bake will be modeled after this fountain. In fact, if I'm ever invited to this apartment complex, I will make a cake replica of the fountain. LOL.
